Beyoncé finally wins Grammy for album of the year

In a historic win at the 67th Grammy Awards, Beyoncé, the artist with the most Grammys to her name, triumphed in the Album of the Year category with “Cowboy Carter.” This groundbreaking album represents Beyoncé’s daring and intellectually rich investigation into the African-American origins of country music.

For the first time, the pop superstar finally won the main prize in the show, an honor she had previously missed out on four times for albums like “Lemonade” and “Renaissance”. The Los Angeles County Fire Department handed over the award during a ceremony focused on L.A. fire relief.

“It’s been many, many years,” she acknowledged in her acceptance speech.

At the 2017 Grammys, when Adele’s “25” triumphed over “Lemonade”, Adele, during her acceptance speech, expressed that she felt it was inappropriate to accept the award as she believed her victory had effectively denied Beyoncé a well-deserved Album of the Year title. Last year, Jay-Z, speaking at the same event, criticized the Recording Academy for showering Beyoncé with numerous genre awards but denying her Album of the Year accolade.

Additionally, Beyoncé earned awards in the categories for best country album and best country duo/group performance (shared with Miley Cyrus).

Debuting in March 2024, “Cowboy Carter” marks Beyoncé’s eighth studio album and the second installment of a trilogy titled “Renaissance.” This LP was produced with an impressive lineup of collaborators such as Miley Cyrus, Pharrell Williams, Raphael Saadiq, the-Dream, Post Malone, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Shaboozey, and Linda Martell. Upon release, it immediately took the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart and held that position for two weeks. Additionally, it became the first album by a Black woman to reach No. 1 on the country album chart. The lead single, “Texas Hold ‘Em,” reigned atop the Hot 100 for two weeks and garnered over 600 million streams on Spotify.

On Christmas Day, Beyoncé, aged 43, performed “Cowboy Carter” for the first time publicly during halftime at an NFL game in Houston, which was broadcast on Netflix. This weekend, the singer hinted at a forthcoming tour related to the album, serving as a sequel to her Renaissance world tour that traveled across the globe in 2023.

Among the other LPs vying for album of the year were Charli XCX’s “Brat,” Jacob Collier’s “Djesse Vol. 4,” Billie Eilish’s “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” André 3000’s “New Blue Sun,” Chappell Roan’s “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet” and Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department.” In simpler terms, these are the other albums nominated alongside Charli XCX’s “Brat,” and so on.

In 2024, Swift took the prize with her album “Midnights.”
