What went down when this year’s best new artist nominees took the Grammys stage

It all started with a joke about Timothée Chalamet’s wispy mustache.

At the 67th Grammy Awards, Trevor Noah, the comedian and host, moves among the audience. He approaches Benson Boone’s table and playfully teases him about being the first to sport a certain facial hair style. Soon after, he introduces Boone’s performance, causing Boone to feign surprise. Quickly, Boone retrieves a microphone from his jacket pocket.

However, the impact generated is far from subsiding. Supermodel Heidi Klum and comedian Nikki Glaser tear apart Boone’s costume, revealing a snug, sequined unitard underneath. They then perform “Beautiful Things” together. Boone follows with his signature backflip, delivering an energetic rendition of the popular song. He demonstrates that Freddie Mercury isn’t the only one who can pull off a tight powder-blue attire — all while somersaulting over a piano. The audience responds with adoration and laughter.

At what appears to be the end of the show, Doechii emerges, dressed in a suit and tie of a dull gray hue. She responds to a set of deep whistle notes, making her entrance. On an elevated industrial stage, she stands. A troop of dancers, each wearing identical gray uniforms, synchronize their movements around her, forming a unified display of agility.

During the performance of “Catfish” and “Denial Is a River”, two tracks from her freshly Grammy-winning mixtape titled “Alligator Bites Never Heal”, she reveals herself in white underwear and a bra. The entire stadium is on tenterhooks, listening attentively to every word she raps. When the spotlight leaves her part of the stage, the camera focuses on SZA’s ecstatic face as she erupts in cheers, while Billie Eilish can be heard exclaiming, “Oh, my god!” in a hushed tone.

In the industrial setting, Doechii shifts to a stage lit with red tones for new artist Teddy Swims. Clad in a long trench coat, he performs a violin-accompanied rendition of “Lose Control,” a track from his album “I’ve Tried Everything but Therapy (Part 1).” Showcasing his vocal prowess, the 31-year-old artist emphasizes his performance with his sparkling teeth.

Shaboozey’s heartbreak ballad takes on a more mellow tune, now known as “Good News.” With a western panache in a suit and bolo tie, this newly minted country artist takes center stage, accompanied by a troupe of cowgirls clad in leather-studded corsets. As the performance moves to “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” it concludes with a toast to Shaboozey, a five-time Grammy nominee, as everyone lifts their hats high.

As the lights fade, the stage subtly slides to unveil Raye, surrounded by an orchestra and a backing choir. Dressed in a stunning floor-length sequined black gown, she launches into “Oscar Winning Tears.” Effortlessly hitting every high note, the British artist exudes confidence as she belts out the song with full emotional intensity. With her microphone cord casually slung over her shoulder, she stands poised and assured, a seasoned performer at heart.

The final act of this five-part powerful sequence concludes just as any performance does – with Charli XCX, her expression serious and her eyes concealed behind dark glasses, offering an approving gesture.
