Why Call the Midwife’s cut-throat decision was the right move
Note: The following article contains discussion of themes including suicide.
Fans of “Call the Midwife” might be deeply saddened as Cyril Robinson (played by Zephryn Taitte) comes back to Poplar, bearing unfortunate tidings.
The pastor returned from a visit with his late wife Lucille (Leonie Elliott), who is estranged from him. He mentioned to Violet (Jane Annabelle Apsion) that he prolonged his stay because Lucille’s mother had suddenly passed away. However, it’s not the sad news of her mother’s death that we are focusing on; instead, there’s another piece of unexpected information that is more troubling.
The initial hint that something might be wrong with Cyril came when Violet proposed that Lucille likely felt relieved to have had her husband’s support during such a sad period, to which he responded: “Indeed. It seems she did.
People eagerly anticipating a confirmation that the strength of their relationship with Rosalind (Natalie Quarry) had not waned amidst his increasing feelings, might well have sensed apprehension when they heard the gravity in his voice during their conversation.
Here comes the sad announcement, unless you’ve previously seen the episode, prepare yourself to re-experience it: Lucille is seeking a divorce from Cyril.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the pastor was hit hard when his backing of his wife’s trip home for healing turned out to be the final straw in their marriage. Yet, it seemed like the wise choice for everyone involved, as portrayed by ‘Call the Midwife’. This almost love triangle scenario was skillfully handled.
As a dedicated gamer, I can say that if we’re talking about the world of gaming, it wouldn’t make sense for game developers to keep a character like Cyril in limbo forever. Just like Elliott, the actress portraying Lucille, has made it clear she won’t reprise her role, Cyril needs to evolve too. His growing feelings for Rosalind might have triggered his return home, sparking the divorce process, but they weren’t the root cause of their separation. It’s time for him to move on and explore new adventures.
Was it really essential to make an already intricate predicament even more complex by introducing a fresh romance? Possibly not, yet the potential relationship between Rosalind and Cyril could provide a thought-provoking viewpoint on interracial dating in the ’70s, considering religious expectations and faith, as a subtheme.
In a tight spot, it became crucial for Lucille to take charge in this situation as Cyril departed to visit her. This was the sole means to increase the chances of Rosalind and Cyril gaining acceptance among fans, some of whom were already dissatisfied with the initial hints of their relationship.
One enthusiast exclaimed, “I’ll be surely excited when he mentioned he’s off to Jamaica to meet Lucille,” posted on BlueSky.
A different individual predicted the plot’s turn after episode two, when they expressed: I’m quite curious to see how this unfolds. I have a suspicion that he’s journeyed to Jamaica for a conversation with Lucille about divorce? (even though such an idea was considered implausible at the time, given his role as a vicar!!) This entire storyline has been strikingly unrealistic, and I feel most sympathetic towards Lucille.
In this scenario, Lucille was the one who ended things, and she did so after Cyril demonstrated honorable conduct by not pursuing his feelings for Rosalind. Instead, he focused on strengthening his bond with his spouse. This leaves room for both Rosalind and Cyril to start fresh, free from judgement because it’s clear that Cyril had acted as best as he could.
It doesn’t mean we should antagonize Lucille either. Given how deeply troubled she was at the point of her departure from the show, with her mental health deteriorating to the extent of contemplating suicide, it seems only fair if she’s found a place where she can heal and regain her well-being. After all, isn’t everyone entitled to happiness?
Cyril was deeply concerned about his image within the church, given how crucial his role is to his personality. He didn’t make the choice to divorce without serious thought, particularly when he contemplated resigning as a pastor and questioning: “What will the congregation think of me if I am a divorced man?
In a less than ideal circumstance, Rosalind emerged with a heavy heart and an untarnished image. When Joyce (Renee Bailey) inquired about her connection with Cyril, Rosalind clarified emphatically that they have no romantic involvement.
She mentioned that he’s married and also serves as a pastor. However, during their emotional talk, she confessed the depth of her emotions towards him despite initially trying to prioritize this information over her own feelings.
She expressed her confusion about which path to take, but it seems whatever decision she makes will prove to be the correct one, much like Cyril.
According to reports from Hello Magazine, the actress who plays Rosalind in Quarry, has confirmed that there’s more to the romance between her character and Cyril. After Cyril left at the end of episode two, she said, “This isn’t the final chapter in their story.
In contrast, the recent episode of “Call the Midwife” seems to subtly suggest that the developing bond between characters may be lasting, providing a foundation for fresh and captivating plot developments.
