Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson’s infamous Fifty Shades trilogy gets new UK streaming home
Prepare yourself to experience the thrill of the Fifty Shades series once more! It’s been announced that as of now, the trilogy has secured a new platform for streaming in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The trilogy of films based on E L James’ works, titled Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed, can now be streamed on Netflix in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Featuring Jamie Dornan from “The Tourist” and Dakota Johnson from “Madame Web,” these movies explore the complex relationship between the wealthy character Christian Grey and the shy Anastasia Steele, set against a backdrop of hidden truths and extensive BDSM practices.
Similar to their source materials, these movies gained a reputation – not just due to their content, but also their quality (or lack thereof). Critics didn’t only disapprove of the plotlines, but increasingly criticized the films for toning down the explicit scenes – the elements that made the books culturally significant – more and more in each sequel.
Freed is criticized as a poorly written film with disjointed plot progressions by Digital Spy, stating it’s not even entertaining enough to be laughable. The review concludes that the movie’s regressive politics serve as an unfortunate conclusion to a franchise, one that both the audience and the actors are likely relieved to have moved on from.
Back in 2023, Dornan shared insights on the trilogy’s response, saying: “I was cast just five weeks before we began shooting. I understood that it came with a lot of weight… essentially, it meant that it was destined to rake in huge profits, while fans would adore it and critics would scorn it.
Here’s how I would rephrase it for a more conversational tone: “As for the books, that’s the story we were telling. We were being faithful to the original works, and we understood the direction it would take.
Despite all the critical drubbing, the three films made combined $1.3 billion at the box office.
The Fifty Shades trilogy is now available to stream for Netflix UK and Ireland subscribers.
