Sleeping Dogs Movie Could Be Revived by Shang-Chi Star Simu Liu

After Donnie Yen announced that the Sleeping Dogs movie seems to have fallen through following nearly eight years of planning, there remains a glimmer of optimism. Simu Liu, who starred in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has hinted at reviving the film and potentially launching a sequel to the game as well.

As Liu explains, he’s been collaborating with the rights owners to bring a “Sleeping Dogs” movie into reality. He later expressed on Twitter/X that: “It’s challenging to get many film projects from the proposal stage to the green light, especially when executives lack understanding of games. However, the immense love for “Sleeping Dogs” shown here has truly reinvigorated us.

Originally, there was a plan for a film followed by a game sequel, which has been his long-held aspiration. Yet, Liu is not keen on acting in either of them personally. Instead, he mentioned that his first phone call would be to Donnie for the movie, and the second one would go to Will Yun Lee, the initial voice actor of Wei. As for satisfying his craving for pork buns, he’d make a third call to DoorDash to locate a nearby restaurant offering them.

Regarding queries about potentially reprising his role as Wei Shen in a new Sleeping Dogs installment, Liu expressed appreciation for the suggestion, yet emphasized that he believes the game’s portrayal of Wei should forever remain iconic, embodied by the legendary Will Yun Lee.

Without a doubt, we’re eagerly awaiting more adventures of Officer Wei Shen! Since the release of Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition on Xbox One and PS4 in 2014 (which followed the original Xbox 360 and PS3 version from 2012), we’ve been yearning for a continuation. If Liu manages to deliver, we’ll be overjoyed.

Few film projects manage to progress from the pitch stage to being greenlit, and it’s disheartening when executives don’t grasp the process. However, the enthusiasm for Sleeping Dogs here has truly invigorated us! Our ultimate goal has always been to bring a movie adaptation to life, followed by a sequel game that everyone can enjoy.
