Netflix Games cancels release plans for Six Games, including Don’t Starve Together and Tales of the Shire
Story Highlights
- Some of the titles no longer launching on Netflix Games, will still be available on other platforms.
- Don’t Starve Together will still be releasing on mobile through Playdigious and Klei Entertainment.
- They recently removed Crashlands 2 from their release schedule and shut down their Southern California-based AAA studio, Team Blue.
Netflix Gaming has revealed substantial modifications in their upcoming game lineup, resulting in the shelving of release plans for various titles that were previously announced. In this restructuring process, six specific games such as “Tales of the Shire”, “Don’t Starve Together”, “Compass Point: West” and others will not be making their way onto the platform. This adjustment is geared towards honing their game collection, focusing on narrative-rich, multiplayer, and mainstream games that are tied to well-known franchises.
Netflix Games cancels the release of Don’t Starve Together, Tales of the Shire, and several others
Over the past few months, Netflix has been making significant adjustments to its gaming strategy, resulting in changes to its game offerings. Unfortunately, two highly anticipated titles – Don’t Starve Together, an expansion of the popular survival game Don’t Starve, and Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game, a single-player life simulation inspired by the beloved Lord of The Rings IP – will no longer be released on Netflix. This decision is confirmed as the official website for Tales of the Shire no longer displays the Netflix Games logo.

The positive update about Don’t Starve Together, initially unveiled in June 2024, remains that it will indeed be accessible on mobile devices. Playdigious is still collaborating with Klei Entertainment to make this happen, ensuring the game’s transition to mobile platforms. As of now, a specific launch date hasn’t been disclosed, but it’s anticipated that you’ll find Don’t Starve Together on both Google Play Store and App Store in the near future.
Netflix confirms decision to adjust its gaming portfolio, leading to several game cancellations
Furthermore, games like “Compass Point: West” by Next Games, “Lab Rat,” and “Rotwood” from Klei Entertainment, as well as “Thirsty Suitors” by Outerloop Games, which were initially slated for Netflix’s exclusive mobile platform, have also been taken off the development schedule.
It’s not unexpected, given that Netflix has a history of canceling games after they’ve been announced. For example, Crashlands 2, an open-world crafting RPG, experienced the same fate and was taken off the release schedule. Just like Don’t Starve Together, Crashlands is scheduled to launch on April 10, 2025, but without Netflix’s backing or participation.
It’s not entirely clear what’s happening with the company, as they’ve also closed down their Southern California AAA studio, Team Blue, without launching any games. This studio was set up specifically to create a multi-platform AAA game based on a completely new intellectual property (IP).
