Solo Leveling live-action: Everything we know so far

As a diehard fan, I can’t contain my excitement! The much-loved web novel, manga, and anime sensation, Solo Leveling, has finally announced its leap into the realm of live-action adaptations. Here’s what we’ve got so far on this thrilling development.

The widely acclaimed manhwa titled “Solo Leveling” has just been given an anime adaptation for its second season. Moreover, it’s been confirmed that a live-action version is also in development! Kakao Entertainment announced the project on January 21st, and here are the details we have at present.

From web-novel to phenomenal adaptations

Back in the summer of 2016, I stumbled upon an intriguing tale penned by the brilliant mind of Chugong, known as “Solo Leveling,” or “The One Who Levels Up Alone.” It all started on a popular online platform called KakaoPage.

The narrative centers around Sung Jin-woo, a lowly E-Rank Hunter, who tirelessly works towards increasing his strength in a realm where humans are persistently menaced by monsters. Rapidly gaining popularity among fantasy enthusiasts, it eventually led to a manhwa adaptation in March 2018.

The manhwa, illustrated by the late Jang Sung-rak (also known as Dubu), who was the head of Redice Studio, spanned over two seasons. The first season ended in March 2022, while the second season aired from August 2020 to December 2021.

During its run, the manhwa occasionally paused for brief intervals due to the health problems experienced by its creator, Dubu, who sadly passed away in July 2022. Despite these pauses, Solo Leveling has become one of the most successful manhwas ever, boasting a staggering 14.3 billion views, as reported by the Korea Times.

The massive success of it opened doors for more versions to follow. In the year 2022, a video game and an animated series were announced. A role-playing game titled “Solo Leveling: Arise,” developed by Netmarble, was released in March 2024. This game can be played on both computers and mobile devices. Within its first six months, it attracted 50 million players and made $139 million in revenue.

The anime version, created by A-1 Pictures and available globally (excluding Asia) via Crunchyroll, achieved notable success. In fact, its second season set a new record, becoming the most popular premiere episode liked on Crunchyroll, surpassing the first season’s previous record.

Since then, it has achieved international fame, becoming the most-watched show on Amazon Prime TV in Japan and regularly appearing in the Top 10 of Netflix’s weekly rankings across 11 different nations.

In April 2023, a new manhwa called “Solo Leveling: Ragnarok” was announced. This series is based on a web novel by the author Daul, who took over from Chugong. The story focuses on Sung Su-ho, the son of Sung Jin-woo, as he takes up his father’s powers. “Solo Leveling: Ragnarok” is written by Dangdo and illustrated by Jin.

The status of Solo Leveling live-action

Kakao Entertainment’s latest statement on their live-action project doesn’t provide any fresh details at this time, only confirming that it’s in development. As of now, there’s no set release date or cast announcements. Still, global fans are already engaging in lively discussions about who could be ideal choices for the characters.

In recent times, there’s been an increase in live-action versions of well-known manhwa (Korean comic books). Popular web novels like Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint and The Remarried Empress, which have already found success as manhwa, are also slated for live-action adaptations. Moreover, a successful Chinese web novel, The King’s Avatar, has been transformed into a live-action series with 40 episodes.

Adapting anime like Solo Leveling into live-action, particularly for action and fantasy genres, can meet with skepticism. However, advancements in CGI and filmmaking technology could potentially bring it to life in a manner faithful to the original work. For instance, Netflix’s One Piece live-action series initially sparked doubts but eventually garnered substantial success, with a second season already being produced.
