Private Party deserved a much better AEW Tag Team Title run
As a passionate AEW fan, I sadly bid farewell to the thrilling tag team title run of Private Party. Last Wednesday on AEW Dynamite, their journey came to an end with a disappointing defeat at the hands of the Hurt Syndicate. Despite the match result being the right call from a booking perspective, their nearly three-month reign left me yearning for more captivating moments.
The beginning of Private Party’s title reign was strategically planned and brimming with promise. Kassidy and Quen quickly became the focus of Jon Moxley and the Death Riders due to their long-standing association with the company, as well as their inability to advance in the tag team division. This confrontation seemed to ignite a spark within Private Party, leading them to swiftly seize the tag team titles from one of the greatest tag teams ever, The Young Bucks. This victory was a defining moment that appeared to mark an increase in status for two original members of AEW.
As a gamer, it feels like my journey with AEW’s tag team titles hit a dead end. Even though Private Party held the belt, their tale never seemed to matter much in the grand scheme of things. Our first title defense at AEW Full Gear was more like a hastily arranged four-way battle that didn’t seem to carry much weight. Yet, somehow, we managed to emerge victorious. However, it was the Kings of the Black Thrones who truly ruled the match, despite our minor triumph.
As a diehard fan, I witnessed the time when my beloved team, Private Party, safeguarded their tag team belts in the sole traditional tag team bout of their reign. They triumphed over the fresh alliance of Lio Rush and Action Andretti, thus retaining their championships. However, this victory didn’t seem to boost their momentum significantly.
Fast-forward just 18 days later, the end arrived for Private Party’s title run, and sadly, they weren’t any better off than they were before claiming the AEW tag team titles.
It’s not mandatory for every title reign to make a major difference in the promotion. But if executed well, the title reign of Private Party could have made a notable impact. This would have boosted another team as formidable contenders for the AEW tag team titles consistently, which is currently a rather chilly division. Moreover, it would have provided an effortless way to involve Private Party in the Death Riders storyline again, pushing them to the spotlight and helping AEW counter Moxley and his group.
There were several paths the AEW creative team could have taken to boost Private Party’s title reign, enhance the tag team division, and revitalize a flagging main storyline. However, after being assaulted by Moxley and the Death Riders, Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen find themselves back at square one. If the coming months don’t involve Private Party regaining their titles, this could be seen as a squandered opportunity for AEW’s creative department.
