Prime Video’s Long-Delayed The Boys Spinoff Is Officially “Making All The Right Noises,” After 3 Years In Development

After three years in the works, there’s good news about the upcoming series, The Boys: Mexico.

Prime Video is creating a new series set in Mexico as part of The Boys franchise. The show is being written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (known for Blue Beetle) and will be executive produced by Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal. Eric Kripke, the showrunner of The Boys, is also involved. He previously shared that The Boys: Mexico will take place after season 5 of The Boys, and characters from the original show might make appearances.

Showrunner Eric Kripke recently told Entertainment Weekly that the first episode of The Boys: Mexico has been submitted to Amazon. They responded well to it and are now providing feedback for changes. Kripke believes that writer-producer Dunnet-Alcocer is currently working on a revised version and remains optimistic about the future of the spin-off. You can find his full statement below.

We just submitted a first draft of the pilot to Amazon, and their initial reaction was very positive. They provided some feedback, which we’re now working to incorporate. Our writer, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, is incredibly talented, and I’m confident he’ll deliver a strong second draft. It’s hard to say what will happen next – predicting success in this industry is impossible – but we’re feeling optimistic.

Just before the first two episodes of The Boys season 5 arrive on Prime Video, Kripke has shared a recent update. This season will be the show’s last, and its events will directly influence the story of The Boys: Mexico, the upcoming spinoff series set afterward. The fate of Homelander and Vought could significantly change the world for superheroes, paving the way for future stories within the franchise, including a show taking place outside the U.S.

Besides The Boys: Mexico, another series is coming: a prequel called Vought Rising. Filming has finished on Vought Rising, and it’s planned to launch on Prime Video in 2027. Set in the 1950s, it will bring back Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy and Aya Cash as Stormfront, and explore the beginnings of the Vought corporation and how superheroes first emerged. There’s also a possibility that Gen V will get a third season, though it hasn’t been confirmed yet.

If a third season of Gen V doesn’t happen, The Boys: Mexico might be the only continuation of the The Boys universe after the main series ends, as Vought Rising is a prequel. While Gen V, with its connection to Vought and appearances by characters we know, is closely tied to The Boys, the Mexico series offers a chance for a more independent story, even though it takes place in the same world.

It’s interesting that The Boys: Mexico and other spin-offs are being developed, considering the original show satirizes the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the tendency for endless franchise sequels. The Boys actually pokes fun at this with its fictional Vought Cinematic Universe, hinting at dozens of future movies. However, a recent comment from a creator about Mexico heading in the right direction suggests it might avoid becoming the very thing the show is making fun of.

It will likely be several years before “The Boys: Mexico” is released. The show is still being developed, with the first episode currently being worked on. Considering the two-year gap between each season of “The Boys” and “Gen V” (from 2022 to 2025), fans shouldn’t expect it soon.
