Jason Watkins’ cancelled ITV crime drama could get a channel swap, star says
Jason Watkins and Tala Gouveia have shared hope for their cancelled ITV drama McDonald & Dodds.
The show centered around the character Gouveia, who played DCI Lauren McDonald, a past Metropolitan Police detective now stationed in Bath to head the Avon and Somerset Police’s Criminal Investigation Department.
She’s working alongside DS Dodds (Watkins), a reticent detective with over a decade of experience, who hasn’t had many opportunities for active investigation on the job.
The series lasted for four seasons, but earlier this year, ITV made the announcement that the cherished crime drama was no longer going to be produced.
Supporters felt heartbroken, but the main actors of McDonald & Dodds hinted at changing networks might secure the series’ continuation.
In conversation with Radio Times, Gouveia remarked, “Perhaps there are other broadcast stations interested in it as well.
It seems the success of this show largely hinges on viewers’ budgets, as they are key to its viewership. Consequently, if it fails to secure its current platform, there’s a good chance it could relocate. Frankly, I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t be open to another attempt at bringing it back.
Watkins mentioned, “Perhaps it’s worth noting that the bond we shared both on-screen and off was a significant aspect of the show’s appeal. We’ve always been quite close, and I believe that intimacy was clearly portrayed in our performances.
One distinctive aspect of our performance is the strong bond we share. If someone were to replicate us, it would be this genuine camaraderie they’d capture.
In the final episode of the fourth season, it appeared that McDonald agreed to her partner’s marriage proposal, suggesting that a wedding might be on the horizon in future episodes.
Contrarily, it was previously announced by Radio Times that the show fell short of the necessary criteria for renewal, implying that it will not be returning.
Besides Gouveia and Watkins, the TV series McDonald & Dodds boasts an ensemble cast featuring Claire Skinner from Outnumbered as Chief Superintendent Mary Ormond and Charlie Chambers from EastEnders as Detective Constable Samuel Goldie.
Or, in a more conversational style:
McDonald & Dodds, like Gouveia and Watkins, is part of an impressive ensemble cast. Claire Skinner, who you may know from Outnumbered, plays Chief Superintendent Mary Ormond, while Charlie Chambers from EastEnders takes on the role of Detective Constable Samuel Goldie.
