First trailer for Wicked star Bowen Yang’s “hilarious” comedy remake
A preview for the upcoming film adaptation of “Wicked,” featuring Saturday Night Live actor Bowen Yang in his remake of “The Wedding Banquet,” is now available to watch.
1993’s initial film revolves around a Taiwanese male, with bisexual inclinations, who needs to wed a woman from the Chinese mainland to camouflage his same-sex relationship and satisfy his conventional parents’ contentment.
In this reboot, instead of the original setup, the protagonist enlists his female roommate who is a lesbian to play the role of his fictitious partner. Both their real-life partners must also participate in the charade.
Under the guidance of director Andrew Ahn, who previously worked on Fire Island, the remake features a star-studded cast that includes Korean actor Han Gi-chan, Lily Gladstone known for Killers of the Flower Moon, and Star Wars’ Kelly Marie Tran.
The film titled “The Wedding Banquet” made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival not long ago, and it’s currently boasting an impressive 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 critical reviews.
Screen Rant praises the movie as incredibly funny, noting that the talented cast works wonderfully together with exceptional comedic delivery. This harmonious blend of actors and narrative structure results in a visually stunning, amusing, heartwarming film that you’ll likely find yourself rewatching multiple times.
Critics have particularly commended the performances of both Gladstone and Tran, noting that they deliver a compelling portrayal of their characters’ journey through in-vitro fertilization.
The exact UK release date for the movie is yet to be announced, but it’s set to debut on March 19 during the opening ceremony of the BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival.
Upon hearing about the upcoming remake, the original movie’s director Ang Lee expressed his sentiment in a statement: “It brings joy to my heart to see that my old film has sparked a new generation to envision their own unique take on it. I eagerly anticipate the fresh perspective Andrew Ahn and his talented cast will bring to life.
Furthermore, you’ll find Yang appearing on the silver screen towards the end of this year in the sequel to Wicked, which is named Wicked: For Good.
The Wedding Banquet will be released on April 18 in US cinemas.
