Josh O’Connor responds to Challengers Oscars snub
Josh O’Connor has spoken up about the latest Academy Award nominations, where the film Challengers didn’t receive a single nod.
Luca Guadagnino’s film, a blend of sports drama and erotic themes, explores the complex love story involving tennis players Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), her spouse Art Donaldson (Mike Faist), and former lover Patrick Zweig (O’Connor). As their professional lives and personal emotions intersect, the trio’s romantic entanglement unfolds.
After receiving rave reviews and being nominated for four awards, including a win for Best Original Score, at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, the movie was anticipated to continue its success throughout the rest of the awards season. However, fans were taken aback when it didn’t receive any nominations at the upcoming Oscars or BAFTAs.
During a chat with IndieWire, O’Connor discussed the unexpected choices made, stating humorously, “We had that [Best Original Score] sewn up.” However, he quickly added, “I’m kidding! All the nominations this year were truly excellent.
Year after year, I find myself awestruck by the plethora of fantastic movies. It never ceases to amaze me what human creativity can produce. Being overlooked for nominations isn’t something that bothers me.
I’m really excited that, this year in particular, my favorite movies – La Chimera and Challengers – were released. It’s wonderful to see that they resonated with people and were well received. While I was initially worried about the lack of nominations, I’m proud of both films and happy that people got to enjoy them.
13 nominations were earned by the musical crime-drama “Emilia Pérez” at the recently announced 97th Academy Awards, making it the frontrunner. Close behind are “The Brutalist” and “Wicked,” each receiving 10 nominations.
Although O’Connor appeared satisfied with the absence of nominations for Challengers, he will have numerous chances to appear at upcoming award shows due to his numerous forthcoming projects. These include “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery”, “Separate Rooms”, and Steven Spielberg’s yet-to-be-titled sci-fi film.
