Beloved London cinema’s future is “under serious threat”
The future of one of London’s most beloved cinemas is “under serious threat“.
Located in the West End, the beloved Prince Charles Cinema is renowned for screening both cult and classic films as well as contemporary releases, making it a go-to spot for cinephiles.
A petition is underway in an attempt to preserve the institution, as its landlords, Zedwell LSQ Ltd, and their parent company, Criterion Capital, have required the addition of a termination clause in their latest lease agreement.
The movie theater communicated that this provision implies that landlords, upon receiving approval for a renovation project of the theater, may face eviction within just six months’ time.
If The Prince Charles Cinema were to close, it wouldn’t just be a loss of a well-known cultural landmark, but also a significant economic driver for the West End. People from across London and its surroundings come here not only to watch movies, but also to shop, dine, and socialize. The consequences would stretch far beyond the four walls of the building.
The Prince Charles Cinema points out that it doesn’t receive any government support, and in the face of numerous cinema shutdowns across the country, it proudly stands against the norm by flourishing as a self-reliant and dynamic establishment.
The movie theater has requested that the landlords promptly retract their request for a break clause in the latest contract, and instead, engage in negotiations on fair terms without the necessity of a lengthy court procedure.
At the time of writing the petition has reached over 32,000 signatures.
Digital Spy contacted Criterion Capital for a response. They confirmed to The Telegraph: “Bubble Chamber Limited has begun lease renewal discussions at Prince Charles Cinema, and the landlord is acting in accordance with the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954.
Bubble Chamber Limited is the owner and operator of the Prince Charles Cinema.
The Prince Charles Cinema holds a special place in the hearts of movie enthusiasts and creative minds within the film industry, as filmmakers such as Paul Thomas Anderson, Emerald Fennell, and John Waters have all expressed admiration for it in the past.
This venue frequently plays classic crowd-pleasers like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “The Room”, and it’s common to see director Tommy Wiseau present for the screenings of the latter film.
