Night Agent’s Gabriel Basso on the show’s ‘grimy, nasty’ fight scenes

In a conversation, Gabriel Basso from The Night Agent series has shared his thoughts on the show’s combat sequences, likening them to being “grubby” and “unsavory.

In this Netflix series, the story revolves around FBI agent Peter Sutherland, portrayed by Basso, who finds himself embroiled in a government conspiracy. His mission: to identify a traitor hidden within the upper echelons of American power.

After the release of the eagerly awaited second season a few weeks ago, Basso discussed with The Hollywood Reporter his ambition to perform his own action sequences in future productions. He emphasized that this approach adds a greater sense of immersion for viewers.

Watching someone face difficult situations makes them more endearing, as it generates a sense of respect and even affection,” the actor explained, referring to Peter. This is because Peter consistently takes risks.

If we don’t prove our actions by avoiding potential harm and instead fabricate safety, it feels dishonest. It’s more like a performance – it’s a deception, but it’s a narrative. However, we were roughhousing. We were getting hurt. Some injuries did occur.

The fights depicted in this series are raw, brutal, and unsavory, yet I find this grittiness endears the protagonist to me. He’s not invincible; instead, he’s consistently testing his limits and sustaining injuries across the series. As the story progresses, his desperation becomes increasingly palpable.

In his recent roles in “Trigger Warning” and “Juror #2”, Basso emphasized his efforts to maintain an intense focus on achieving a high level of “realness” during production. However, he acknowledged that the presence of hair and makeup sometimes posed challenges for achieving complete authenticity.

He stated that spending numerous hours in the makeup room, with hair styling and retouches between every take, is a disappointment to the audience’s expectations. This is particularly true when it comes to real-life fighting – after being hit, you don’t magically maintain your charm. It’s not like you can deliver your lines while looking stunningly attractive after getting punched.

I find it painful, and misleading to portray Peter as an invincible character when in reality, he’s prone to injuries. It’s not fair to the audience or the show to present him as if he’s never hurt and always at his best. Therefore, I consistently strive for authenticity by ensuring that he experiences injuries and doesn’t always operate at full strength.”

This version maintains the original meaning while using simpler language and a more conversational tone.

The Night Agent streams on Netflix.
