James Van Der Beek Thanks Dad for ‘Life-Saving’ Support During Cancer Battle

James Van Der Beek shared his gratitude for his father’s support amid his cancer battle.

Last Saturday, the 47-year-old actor shared a heartfelt Instagram post on his father’s birthday, expressing deep emotions.

‘During times when I’ve felt low this year, your support, which came without me asking and with no expectation of thanks, has not only saved my life, but also made me feel more alive,’ he wrote to his father, the renowned baseball player, James William Van Der Beek.

As I prepare for my upcoming treatment, I find myself relocating to the tranquil haven of a rural ranch – a serene setting that will serve as my sanctuary during this time. Notably, I’ve chosen to lend my support to an extraordinary cause, participating in The Real Full Monty, a unique special aimed at raising cancer awareness.

He mentioned tasks such as preparing lunches, starting fires for VanderKimberly, chauffeuring children, and looking after both dogs and chickens,” or

“He listed responsibilities including preparing lunches, kindling fires for VanderKimberly, driving the kids, and tending to both dogs and poultry.

‘Neither of which you ever wanted and would just as soon never had.’ 

The former star of Dawson’s Creek expressed gratitude towards his father for the way he navigated every challenge presented by cancer.

The actor stated, “I realize this might push you beyond your limits, but ever since our mother passed away, you have repeatedly stood by my side when I needed it most. I didn’t even realize how much I depended on you.

As I observe your growth and witness the type of man and father you have become, it boosts my self-assurance beyond what words can convey. I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for having originated from you.

‘Thank you for being the best. Ever. Period.’ 

Apart from an affectionate message, he posted a collection of photos featuring his father and added a picture showing the proud grandfather surrounded by several grandchildren.

Additionally, he shared a picture featuring himself, his father, and his wife Kimberly Van Der Beek, as well as a heartwarming image where he’s pictured with his daughter-in-law.

Van Der Beek further commented, “I’ll uphold my pledge that we’ll never require you to change Jeremiah’s diapers.

Jeremiah is the youngest out of six children the actor shares with his wife Kimberly Van Der Beek. 

Apart from a child who is two years old, this long-term pairing of lovers is additionally blessed with five other children: Olivia, age fourteen; Annabel, ten; Emilia, eight; Gwendolyn, six; and Joshua, twelve.

Approximately two months ago, the actor disclosed that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer as far back as August 2023.

In November 2024, he shared that he had been handling his diagnosis personally, making efforts towards resolution, all while receiving tremendous support from his exceptional family.

‘There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.’ 

Toward the end of last year, he additionally participated in the live show “The Real Full Monty,” aimed at raising cancer awareness on a nationwide scale.

The actor joined Anthony Anderson in the Fox production that aired in December 2024.

In a conversation with USA Today, the seasoned Hollywood actor expressed that he found the universe amusing and felt an instant connection to the show, confirming his participation.

‘My brain had to catch up to what I’d be doing,’ he explained.

The actor went on to say, “I’ve never experienced anything like this before, it was completely new to me.

‘The added layer was this was going to be my first time talking about my diagnosis.’
