Peter Dinklage’s ’80s horror reboot is finally coming to cinemas
The iconic character from the 1980s comedy-horror series, “The Toxic Avenger,” featuring the talented Peter Dinklage, has officially been released in the United States for public viewing.
In the modern retelling of the 1984 cult favorite, Peter Dinklage, famously recognized for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, takes on the role of Winston Gooze. This character starts off as a janitor but undergoes a dramatic transformation into a mutant crime-fighter following an unexpected incident.
After its debut at Fantastic Fest in September 2023, the movie has been in development since it couldn’t find a distributor. However, good news for fans as Cineverse announced that the reboot will hit US theaters in 2025 (as reported by Variety)).
In his statement, writer-director Macon Blair expressed heartfelt appreciation towards the team behind “The Toxic Avenger” who were not only supportive but also skillfully guided us as we sought the ideal distributor for our movie.
It’s exciting that people can catch this movie in theaters – it’s a lively, action-packed flick that’s more enjoyable when watched with an audience. The titular mutant character wreaks havoc on the villains using an unlikely weapon: a mop. This family-friendly film promises to be a fantastic source of entertainment!
Our aim has consistently been to maintain the essence and soul of the original Toxie, an image deeply etched in my mind from childhood, while also creating a production that Troma enthusiasts will appreciate. Simultaneously, we strive to breathe new life into this character by introducing something novel and exciting.
Working with Lloyd [Kaufman] and Michael [Herz] at Troma has been a joyful experience. Everyone at Legendary is shining like stars, and I’m eagerly looking forward to collaborating with the talented team at Cineverse to share this adaptation of Toxie with both new and long-time fans.
Besides Dinklage, the cast for The Toxic Avenger comprises Luisa Guerreiro, Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Julia Davis, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon. Notably, Blair is not only involved in writing and directing, but also has an acting role within the production.
Initially released was the original film, which subsequently had three sequels: “Toxic Avenger Part II” in 1989, “The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie” also in 1989, and “Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV” in 2000. Additionally, a television series spin-off called “Toxic Crusaders” was produced.
The Toxic Avenger will be released in the US in 2025. There is currently no UK release date.
