Josh Brolin Threatens to Quit Acting Over Dune 2 Oscars Snub

Josh Brolin expressed his disappointment on social media when director Denis Villeneuve wasn’t nominated for Best Director at the Oscars, jokingly stating that he might consider retiring from acting instead.

Previously, the 56-year-old actor expressed his opinion to Variety in November, stating that director Denis Villeneuve, who is also 57 years old, was unfairly overlooked by the Academy when he wasn’t nominated for the initial Dune film, which hit theaters at the end of 2021.

As a dedicated follower, I myself would make an astonishing promise if Villeneuve were to be overlooked for the highly-praised sci-fi sequel, shouldering the responsibility of reprising my role as Gurney Halleck yet again.

Last autumn, Brolin expressed that if he isn’t nominated this year, he plans to retire from acting. He felt that the movie was superior to the initial one, praising its exceptional quality and Denis as a top-tier filmmaker among the greatest in our industry.

‘If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.’

Once more, Villeneuve was overlooked on Thursday, as he failed to make the cut in the category of Best Achievement in Directing nominees. Instead, this year’s list recognized Brady Corbet of The Brutalist, Jacques Audiard for Emilia, Sean Baker for Anora, Coralie Fargeat for The Substance, and James Mangold for A Complete Unknown.

A resident originally from Santa Monica, California, seemingly resting on his couch at home, subtly alluded to a past promise he had made in an Instagram Story post responding to the snub of Villeneuve.

According to Brolin, it seems he’s planning to leave acting due to Denis Villeneuve not receiving a nomination. To be honest, I don’t understand why things work this way. Nevertheless, that’s alright.

Joe Walker and Denis, you truly earned this! That movie is fantastic – even surpassing the original in my opinion. The recognition it’s been receiving is well-deserved by all involved. I’m thrilled to have contributed to such a great production. Enjoy it!

Other professionals in the field seemed to share Brolin’s viewpoint regarding the overlook of Villeneuve, who received a nomination for a Critics Choice Award for his directing work on the movie.

Chris Miller, the producer of Spider-Verse, shared on Twitter yesterday that while there were numerous movies with exceptional direction this year, Denis’s work across all aspects of filmmaking was truly remarkable.

Dune: Part Two’s 2021 predecessor Dune: Part One won six Oscars on 10 nominations. 

In February 2022, Brolin expressed his opinion that the Academy appeared “unintelligent” for failing to recognize the director of a film that received ten nominations.

As a devoted admirer, I find it hard to comprehend how one can amass ten nominations, yet the individual who accomplished the seemingly impossible with that book is overlooked. It serves as a reminder of both the brilliance and the absurdity in this world.
