How BBC’s The Traitors just silenced its critics
Although “The Traitors” is currently one of the most watched TV shows, it doesn’t make it invulnerable to constructive feedback. In fact, we have our own thoughts on it that we’d like to share.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve always been intrigued by the ongoing debate about the supposed ‘bug’ in the format of a beloved TV show we both enjoy. Since its debut seasons, this theory has doggedly followed the series like an unwanted glitch in a game. However, Wednesday night’s episode 10 (January 22) has effectively silenced that argument for good.
You might refer to it as the “Morning-After Castle Entry Theory,” since it revolves around how survivors of an in-game murder enter the castle the day following the incident.
The main idea behind the theory is that those contestants arriving last for a chat over coffee are considered Loyal. This practice, often used for dramatic effect (since it’s television), happens based on who the Deceivers have identified as being potentially in danger of receiving a ‘death warrant’.
As a devoted fan, I find myself pondering over an intriguing concept: Couldn’t the Faithfuls leverage this tool to monitor the order of those grabbing morning orange juice? By doing so, they might uncover patterns that hint at who among us could potentially be a Traitor.
Despite being disproven several times in the past, the “breakfast theory” persists and appears to be deeply rooted within the culture of Traitors. It’s still gaining popularity among viewers.
When it was discovered that Joe had fallen victim to the Traitors’ plot, having missed breakfast, it turned out that Leanne and Charlotte were the unexpected newcomers – yes, Charlotte, now officially ruling as queen of the Traitors, following Minah’s surprising expulsion, which occurred later in the episode.
Indeed, it’s clear that Charlotte wasn’t an original member, as she was brought into the group by Minah during the course of the series. This fact calls into question the ‘breakfast theory’, because if a traitor could potentially be recruited at any time, it wouldn’t make sense for the Faithful to trust the one who arrives last in the morning.
This theory hasn’t just been disproven in the latest instance; it’s also been refuted before.
Previously on “The Traitors,” contestant Ivan Brett, a participant from the inaugural season, has openly criticized the “Late Faithful” (or Laithful) approach, stating that it is unequivocally flawed.
He mentioned that, although it was often the case in season one, it wasn’t a constant occurrence. To illustrate this, he brought up the instance where Amanda, a beloved character known for her traitorous actions, arrived late one morning.
Ivan mentioned several occasions during the second season when someone identified as a Traitor came late for breakfast, such as Paul and Harry among others.
He mentioned later that the Traitor was late for breakfast four times. Additionally, on another occasion, not two Traitors showed up for breakfast, as they were involved in a significant task and confined to the dungeon during that time.
In the third season, there’s been a change in this specific aspect, and Charlotte’s delayed entry is the most recent instance where this has occurred.
“It’s fair to say, this myth should be busted,” Ivan said back in January.
Clearly, it really is way overdue.
Season 3 of the series “The Traitors” will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evening starting at 9:00 PM.
A new season as well as a spin-off featuring celebrities have already been planned, and international adaptations are also available for streaming on iPlayer.
