In a groundbreaking moment, Karla Sofia Gascon, played by Emilia Perez on the screen, made Oscar history by becoming the first openly transgender actress to receive a nomination after 97 years of ceremonies.
At the announcement of nominations for the 97th Academy Awards on Thursday, the 52-year-old Spanish actress received recognition in the Best Actress category for her work in a Netflix movie.
As I, a passionate admirer, eagerly anticipate the upcoming event, I find myself standing shoulder-to-shoulder with giants. Cynthia Erivo, her Wicked charm captivating audiences; Mikey Madison, whose Anora magic has left spectators spellbound; Demi Moore, whose Substance performance is nothing short of mesmerizing; and Fernanda Torres, whose I’m Still Here presence commands attention – they are my formidable competitors. The stage is set for an unforgettable battle of talents!
On that particular morning, Karla’s movie garnered significant recognition. It was nominated in various categories such as the prestigious Best Picture, Best Director for Jacquest Audiard, Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldana, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best International Feature.
In the movie, Karla takes on the role of Emilia Perez, a notorious cartel leader who seeks assistance from underestimated attorney Rita Mora Castro (portrayed by Zoe Saldana) to orchestrate a convincing death hoax, enabling her to genuinely live as herself.
This awards season, the actress has undeniably paved her own way, becoming the first transgender actress to be nominated for an award at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards.

Additionally, she graciously received the prestigious award for Best Film – Musical or Comedy that evening and delivered an impassioned address in recognition of Emilia Perez.
Karla expressed her gratitude and shared that she deliberately selected those colors tonight as they hold a special meaning. Essentially, she’s conveying the idea that light consistently triumphs over darkness.
I have quite a bit to share with you, as your actions could potentially land us in trouble or cause harm. But no matter what, they can never erase our spirit, our being, or define who we are. So I urge you, speak up! Assert, ‘I am who I am.’ Not ‘who you are.’ Thank you for listening.
