Bobby Lashley is bigger than the AEW tag team division
On January 22, there was a title switch during AEW Dynamite. Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin emerged victorious against Private Party, earning themselves the AEW World Tag Team Championship titles. The Hurt Syndicate has claimed gold within a short span of time since joining the company. It’s exciting to see Lashley and his team portrayed as significant threats; however, given his stature, it feels unusual to have him in the AEW tag team division.
Kicking off our discussion, let’s acknowledge that having The Hurt Syndicate headline is a significant move. Their fans have longed for them to be the main event since their time as The Hurt Business in WWE, but that didn’t happen. When they joined All Elite Wrestling, there was a sense of renewal. So far, it’s been exciting to witness MVP, Benjamin, and Lashley receiving the prominent roles they deserve at this stage of their careers.
It’s surprising to see Lashley holding tag team championships, given that he’s been wrestling for 26 years and this is his first time winning a tag team title. After all, he’s consistently found himself in the main event scene across different promotions. Yet, this achievement feels a bit out of sync. This might be because Lashley’s stature suggests that he should be competing for bigger titles, like the AEW World Tag Team Championships, rather than these particular ones.
Initially, the enthusiasm for tag team wrestling is undeniable among fans, yet All Elite Wrestling hasn’t maximized its potential in this area over the past couple of years. Previously, tag team matches were a major crowd-puller for the company, but the landscape has shifted. The titles seemed more symbolic than substantial. Could there be opportunities to revitalize the tag division around The Hurt Syndicate? Absolutely, though it would require a renewed focus on a group that hasn’t been actively nurtured in some time.
As a passionate gamer, I firmly believe that Lashley should be thrust into major singles feuds for maximum impact. The Swerve Strickland versus Lashley match was just the tip of the iceberg, but unfortunately, it fizzled out after only one bout. Now is the time to explore other possibilities, like a clash between Lashley and Jay White, who are currently sidelined from title contention.
Or consider Lashley going head-to-head with Kazuchika Okada – what an epic battle that would be! There’s a multitude of ways AEW can keep Lashley engaged in significant storylines without immediately pinning a singles title on him until the main title scene expands a bit. With such a talented roster at their disposal, AEW has numerous options to pair Lashley with names that could greatly benefit from an early encounter during his tenure with the company.
Bobby Lashley has established himself as a significant figure in professional wrestling, having spent nearly three decades in the industry. With his experience and stature, it’s only fitting that he should be involved in main event storylines whenever possible. He’s always seen himself as more of a solo act rather than a tag team player due to his belief in his own grandeur. As we approach 2025, Lashley maintains the same perspective, feeling that he is still too important for the AEW tag team division.
