DJ Spoony Reveals Scars Healing After Emergency Brain Surgery
DJ Spoony shared some news about his wellbeing, following his announcement that he underwent emergency brain surgery during the Christmas season.
At the close of the year, the 54-year-old radio host shared on Instagram that medical professionals found a subdural hematoma (a type of brain bleeding), following his persistent one-month long headache complaints.
Posting a collection of pictures from his time in the hospital, he expressed appreciation for being with his dear ones over Christmas following his challenging experience, acknowledging that it was a humbling moment for him.
About several weeks past, DJ Spoony shared some good news with his fans, expressing that he was ‘recovering wonderfully’ and admitting he had been ‘touched deeply’ by the abundance of support he’s encountered.
During a chat with his colleague Mark Goodier on his Thursday morning radio program, he expressed confidence in his wellbeing, stating that while he wasn’t completely back to normal just yet, he was genuinely feeling quite well.
Mark inquired, “I’d like to know how you’re doing since many people saw you on social media during Christmas. You seem to be in top form now, absolutely?
DJ Spoony expressed gratitude and went on to say: “Absolutely, thanks! I’m resuming my activities now… You see, my physical condition isn’t quite what it used to be, but I’m in good health overall. My wounds are healing impressively.
I’m amazed at how quickly my scars are fading. It seems these healed faster than some of my old paper cuts.
He continued, “I must say, I’m quite skilled. I appreciate your inquiry very much. And I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has reached out. To be truthful, it’s all been quite overpowering.
Mark mentioned: “The human body is incredible at healing itself, particularly after significant injuries. I’m really pleased that you’re on the mend and almost back to your full strength.
After announcing his upcoming surgery, DJ Spoony received numerous messages of support from friends and family, even Davina McCall – who herself underwent a brain tumor removal procedure not too long ago – extended her well wishes.
On his social media platform, he posted: “I shared some news about my wonderful Christmas! I am deeply thankful for everything that made it so special. For all the blessings, affection, and love that filled it.
For about three or four weeks, I’ve been experiencing a persistent headache. On Saturday, the 21st, I decided to seek medical attention at the emergency room because it’s not something that happens often with me.
After conducting some examinations, they suggested I undergo a CT scan due to their findings. This scan revealed a minor brain hemorrhage, which had already ceased but was exerting slight pressure on my brain, leading to the recurrent headaches.
They mentioned that they would refer me to Adenbrooks since an immediate operation was necessary. This came as a surprise, considering I had been consistently working and training throughout my period of headaches.
I stayed in the hospital for four consecutive nights, and underwent surgery on Christmas Day, at 2 a.m. Given the exceptional care they provide, this was considered a standard procedure to address my subdural hematoma.
He added: “It was amazing that my headache just vanished instantly. For four long weeks, I had been plagued by it, but now, at last, there was tranquility.
On Christmas Day, I awoke in the hospital. Overwhelmed with gratitude, I had something wonderful to anticipate: returning home to my beloved family and friends. They had all shown such compassion during the past few days, with their visits, encouragement, phone calls, and messages. Truly humbling.
‘Upon waking up close to some people who didn’t know their location, it was a bit sad knowing that they would likely spend most, if not all, of the day without their loved ones. I often think about them daily and hope for their steady progress in recovery.’ [sic]
In closing, he expressed his gratitude: “I’d like to thank Bedford Hospital for performing the scan and Addenbrokes for finishing the job. You truly are top-notch professionals in your field. A big thank you to every nurse, doctor, and health assistant who took care of me. I am also grateful to the NHS. My thanks go out to Richard Hughes, Michael Edwards, Arne Slot, and Mo Salah.
A subdural hematoma refers to a critical situation in which blood accumulates between the inner layer of the skull and the brain’s outer covering, often requiring immediate surgical intervention for treatment.
In many instances, subdural haematomas occur due to traumatic head injuries, these can be quite severe, like those resulting from car accidents, falls, or physical attacks. However, even minor head impacts may infrequently result in this condition.
Davina promptly responded to DJ Spoony’s post, expressing her approval with the exclamation: “Hooray!!! Great outcome!!!
The television host, aged 57, has extensive knowledge about brain surgeries due to undergoing the procedure herself last November to excise a seldom-seen benign brain tumor. This type of tumor occurs in only three out of every million individuals.
Zoe Ball promptly responded to DJ Spoony’s post, saying: “My dear one, I’m glad you received proper care and the wonderful team took good care of you. I hope you get some rest and heal properly. Sending you tons of love ❤️
Alternate version of Kate Lawler’s message: “Overjoyed to hear you’re alright! I always enjoy surprising the people I care about. Absolutely stunning! Kisses xx ❤️”
“Right back at it, buddy.” (This version maintains the informal and friendly tone of the original message.)
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’m thrilled to announce that starting next Monday, I’ll be stepping into the airwaves for my fresh new show, The Good Groove with DJ Spoony. On this very same day, Scott Mills and Trevor Nelson will also be debuting their Radio 2 shows. Let’s embark on a musical journey together, every Monday to Thursday!
When I chatted with Mark about sharing the same performance day as the trio, the DJ (John St John Joseph BEM), couldn’t help but express how delightful and wonderful it felt.
He added: ‘Sharing the initial school experience is comforting, it’s not just me being the newcomer on the first day. So, let’s navigate the halls together and have lunch together too!’
It’s truly wonderful news, it seems clear that Scott stands out as the ideal choice for the Breakfast position, and I couldn’t be happier for him, as this role appears to align perfectly with his passion.
I’m excited for Trevor to work during afternoons so he can experience daylight in the studio, as he’s been working at night for the past six years.
DJ Spoony’s time slot is between 10pm and midnight, however, he affirmed his readiness for the long nights, expressing: ‘Working four nights a week makes me the night owl – I’m up to the task!… Staying awake past sunset isn’t a struggle for me!’
He recalled how he developed his love for radio, after being in the industry for three decades.
He shared: “My very first show on pirate radio was truly special. Growing up, I used to tune in to the radio, listening to the legends, the true icons, such as Steve Wright who later worked alongside me, as well as Kenny Everett and Chris Tarrant.
Originally, I’d often find myself gazing at the radio, as if I were watching TV. Then, when the moment arrived for me to begin broadcasting myself, I surprisingly felt quite experienced, despite it being my very first live segment.
Moving forward from that point, we found ourselves on Radio 1 as part of the Dream Team, a big shout-out to Timmy and Mikey, in the year 2000. Since then, it’s been a rollercoaster ride with ups and downs, but I must say, I’m thoroughly enjoying it. However, I can hardly believe that I’ve entered my third decade – that’s quite astonishing!
In the ’90s, DJ Spoony rose to prominence as a garage music disc jockey. His journey took him from unauthorized radio broadcasts to being among the pioneering garage DJs who introduced the music genre on BBC Radio 1.
He went on to front a Five Live phone-in show and hosted the Radio 1 Sunday Breakfast Show.
Additionally, he danced on Strictly Come Dancing in 2006 with the pro, Ola Jordan. However, their journey ended in the third round, even though they received favorable remarks from the judges.
In 2022, DJ Spoony received a British Empire Medal as a nod to his charitable work using music throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.
For a span of ten weeks during the 2020 lockdown, he conducted live DJ sessions from his residence each Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, spinning tracks from R&B, classic dance tunes, soul music, and UK garage.
Live streams on platforms like Twitch and Instagram gathered over £20,000 for the NHS and numerous charities, attracting over a million viewers.
The live broadcasts on Twitch and Instagram raised more than £20,000 for the NHS and various charities, with over one million people tuning in to listen.
As a fangirl bursting with excitement, I can barely contain myself when I reflect on the moment I received my MBE! Honestly, I never dreamed those streams would make such a profound impact – it was beyond anything I ever dared to imagine as DJ Spoony!
And while it may sound rather romantic, I view this recognition as equally belonging to our community and myself. That’s primarily why I’m accepting it, as I find myself somewhat torn about the entire situation.
However, I will handle this for everyone who stood united, making those afternoons and evenings during the stream enjoyable.
He devoted his MBE to his deceased mother, stating: “I learned how to dance by standing on her feet, and she provided the rhythm.
