Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese Team Up for Long-Awaited Serial Killer Thriller!
One of the lengthiest collaborative endeavors between Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese has received a significant boost in momentum recently.
20th Century Studios is backing the movie adaptation of Erik Larson’s 2004 non-fiction book, The Devil in the White City, according to reports from Deadline on Wednesday.
As reported by the publication, Leonardo DiCaprio may once more take on a role for a fact-based serial killer thriller, and Martin Scorsese is currently in discussions about directing this potential project.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but be captivated by the narrative that unfolds post their remarkable collaboration on “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the critically-acclaimed Western crime saga.
While it’s exciting for fans of DiCaprio and Scorsese’s collaborations that the project is making progress, it’s important not to be overly optimistic. The idea has been under discussion since Leonardo DiCaprio acquired the rights to the nonfiction history back in 2010.
Initially, the movie was intended for production as a full-length film at Paramount, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role and Martin Scorsese behind the camera, but unfortunately, those plans didn’t work out.
Initially planned as a limited series on Hulu in 2022 featuring Keanu Reeves and directed by Todd Field, the project did not materialize. Within two months of its announcement, both Keanu Reeves and Todd Field left the project.
Currently, there’s an opportunity for DiCaprio to partner with his long-time friend and frequent collaborator, Scorsese, who he’s worked with since the 2002 film “Gangs of New York.” Together, they might breathe life into some haunting history.
As reported by Deadline, the duo are set to collaborate on their next project, alongside Stacey Sher, Rick Yorn, and Jennifer Davisson – Leo DiCaprio’s partner at Appian Way Productions.
Reports indicate that a recent gathering with executives from the once-known 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century), following Disney’s acquisition, went positively. They are now considering making a theatrical version of Larson’s book as a result.
Although it has been floating around for over a dozen years, there is no existing script for “Devil In The White City” at the moment.
Larson’s book, titled “Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Transformed America,” narrates a two-tiered tale, centered on the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.
This book, written in a manner that resembles a novel rather than typical historical text, compares the impressive accomplishments of the World’s Fair architect Daniel Burnham to the heinous acts committed by one of America’s earliest known serial killers, H.H. Holmes.
At a given moment, Holmes, who managed a hotel in Chicago, faced trial and conviction for the murder of just one individual. However, there were suspicions that he was responsible for the deaths of multiple others. Remarkably, Holmes admitted to committing 27 murders; yet, it was later discovered that some of his supposed victims were still alive.
During that time, the sensationalist papers of the day labeled the hotel he managed as a “murder mansion,” and it was alleged that it contained hidden chambers for tormenting patrons, along with concealed passageways and a lethal gas room.
In reality, many of these statements turned out to be significant overstatements or outright lies.
This would be the seventh project for DiCaprio and Scorsese if it comes to fruition.
Initially, they collaborated on the movie “Gangs of New York” in 2002. Subsequently, they teamed up again for the Howard Hughes biopic “The Aviator,” followed by “The Departed,” which won an Oscar as Scorsese’s first directorial award and remains his only one to date in this category.
In 2010, they teamed up again for the movie “Shutter Island,” a gripping thriller. Following this collaboration, they produced their highest-grossing film yet, titled “The Wolf of Wall Street,” in 2013.
In 2015, DiCaprio collaborated with Robert DeNiro, one of Scorsese’s other acting muses, on a short film titled “The Audition”. However, their most recent significant theatrical release was “Killers Of The Flower Moon” in 2023, which was distributed by Paramount Pictures and Apple TV+.
Each movie they’ve produced has earned rave reviews from critics, some even being hailed as contemporary masterpieces. Their collaborative efforts in filmmaking have proven to be incredibly lucrative, accumulating a staggering $1.3 billion in revenue together.
