Demi Lovato Defends Non-Binary Identity After Pronoun Change Backlash

On Tuesday, Demi Lovato expressed a touching message of solidarity towards individuals identifying as non-binary and transgender, following a recent explanation about her decision to revert to using she/her pronouns.

Through a post on her Instagram stories, the artist, aged 32, humorously commented: “For those who identify as trans or non-binary, like myself, remember that you are recognized, understood, supported, and valued. You are loved, you are not isolated.

As a lifestyle guide, let me affirm that no one else has the power to define your identity; it’s deeply rooted within you. Through these challenging times, remember that you possess an inner strength capable of guiding you forward. I want you to know, with all certainty, that my admiration and affection for you are unwavering.

Following Donald Trump’s declaration that the U.S. would exclusively recognize two biological sexes (male and female), and his insistence on using the term “sex” instead of “gender,” a new policy was implemented.

His decree requires identity documents like passports and visas to be issued according to an individual’s inherent, unchangeable sex categorization as either male or female.

Federal agencies were advised to cease financing initiatives that support ‘gender ideology’, even as LGBTQ+ advocacy groups pledged resistance against the U.S. President’s decisions in this matter.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to share an update about my personal journey. After publicly identifying as non-binary in May 2021, I recently made the decision to revert back to using she/her pronouns in August 2022. This choice reflects my continued exploration and understanding of my identity.

In a chat with GQ Hype Spain, she shared that she found it tiring to constantly elaborate on her choice to identify as gender fluid.

As a lifestyle expert, let me share my experience: I’ve consistently found myself needing to enlighten others about my preferred pronouns, which can be quite taxing and draining, much like constantly charging a phone battery that seems to run out too quickly.

After feeling quite exhausted, I recognize even more strongly the significance of carrying on with my mission to share this message.

Demi openly shared her difficulty with using bathrooms assigned by gender, expressing a desire for more all-inclusive, gender-neutral facilities for everyone’s comfort.

She shared that she encounters this situation daily, such as in public restrooms. Despite not fully identifying with it, she is required to use the women’s restroom.

Alternatively, it can occur when completing forms, like government paperwork or others requiring you to identify your gender. However, with just the choices of ‘male’ or ‘female’, I find this categorization doesn’t align with my personal understanding.

She mentioned that she’s been accustomed to choosing ‘female’ because of the limited choices available, and then said: ‘I believe this needs to evolve. I hope, in due course, we’ll have more options.’

In August 2022, Demi opened up regarding her decision to use specific pronouns once again in a conversation on the Spout Podcast. She shared that she has chosen to be referred to as ‘she/her’ after recently experiencing a stronger sense of femininity within herself.

I have resumed using the pronouns she/her in reference to myself. To be honest, I consider myself quite fluid, so I don’t really identify strictly as one gender or another. However, I feel that last year, I found a balance between my masculine and feminine energies within me.

She clarified that when presented with a restroom sign labeled ‘Women and Men’, she didn’t find a suitable option because she didn’t identify as strictly female in that moment.

Instead of identifying as a man, I merely felt human. This sensation, for me, represents the essence of being human without any specific gender label attached. That’s the concept behind ‘they’ – simply acknowledging our shared humanity.

Lately, I’ve been identifying more as female, which is why I’m going back to using ‘she/her’ pronouns. However, let me emphasize that perfection isn’t expected from anyone. People make mistakes with pronouns sometimes, and when learning about someone’s identity, it’s crucial to extend respect.

On her Instagram bio, Demi states her pronouns as ‘they/them/she/her.’

Demi came out as non-binary and revealed they/them pronouns the previous year.

I just wanted to clarify that I’m still in the process of learning and growing, so please understand that I’m not trying to present myself as an expert or a representative.

Demi encouraged fans to ‘carry on with your authentic selves,’ expressing ‘lots of affection’ towards those who are grappling with accepting their identities.

In a related post accompanying the video, the celebrity noted: “Each morning offers us a fresh start and a new opportunity to become the person we aspire to be.

Over the course of most of my existence, I’ve had the privilege of unfolding myself under your watchful eyes… You’ve witnessed my triumphs as well as my struggles, and every aspect of my journey in between.

Beyond just a personal voyage, I’ve found myself simultaneously navigating this path not only for myself but also for the audience behind the lenses.

Today, I’m thrilled to delve deeper into my life with everyone – I feel honored to announce that I identify as non-binary. From now on, I kindly request that you use ‘they/them’ pronouns when referring to me.

After much personal growth and introspection, I continue to learn and discover more about myself. I’m not claiming to be an authority or representative for anyone else. By sharing this with you, I’m exposing yet another layer of my vulnerability.

‘I’m taking this action for people everywhere who haven’t had the chance to be themselves openly with those closest to them. Keep on being yourself and remember that my thoughts are filled with love for you xox.’
