Overwhelmed, Under Pressure, Exhausted

On Wednesday, Jordan Ablett choked back sobs while discussing an emotional breakdown she experienced recently, in a heartfelt statement she posted.

33-year-old partner of AFL star Gary Ablett Jr, and wife to the Geelong champion, shared with her Instagram audience that she’s feeling unexpected apprehension about the forthcoming publication of her personal memoir.

Sharing a photo where she appears to be wiping away tears, she mentioned that she’s been weeping about her upcoming memoir titled “One Day At A Time.” This book will delve into various aspects, including the struggles she encountered while bringing up a child with special needs.

In simpler terms, Jordan and Gary have a five-year-old child named Levi who battles a relatively uncommon, progressive condition affecting his lungs significantly.

While they haven’t revealed the precise nature of Levi’s condition, they have made it clear that his lifespan is significantly reduced.

Jordan shared an authentic picture, though it might not be the most glamorous, she wrote alongside the image where she is seen hiding her eyes with her hand.

She was drying her eyes during a time when they just wouldn’t cease flowing. Typically, she avoids using her phone in such emotional moments, but this time, it seemed authentic and accurately portrayed the emotions she’s been experiencing recently, she went on to say.

Over the last month, I’ve found myself working tirelessly on my book to ensure it meets its deadline. The entire project has been an emotional roller coaster, yet at each stage of completion, I haven’t felt this weary as I get closer to final printing and seeing my work become tangible.

Recently, there was a moment when I seriously thought about closing the book on my project and not sharing it with the world. The idea of exposing my personal thoughts and feelings to everyone is overwhelming, and it has led to unexpected bouts of anxiety that I’ve had to confront and manage.

In my efforts to share, I’ve often needed to keep sight of the broader context. It’s been a journey filled with emotional moments, as I’ve shed numerous tears. At times, I’ve felt burdened, pressured, and drained.

In my own words, I found motivation in the title of my book, “One Day At A Time.” It inspired me to persevere and complete the task of writing my memoir, rather than feeling overpowered or overwhelmed by the process.

She made it clear from the start that her intention was to tell her story as a means of inspiring and giving hope to others. If her book didn’t serve a meaningful purpose, she had no interest in writing it just for the sake of doing so.

I am incredibly thankful for those who have been by my side, offering comfort and encouragement. They’ve helped remind me that I’m nearing the end of a long journey. Recently, someone shared with me the thought that a book is never truly completed, it just gets published, and that sentiment rings so true!

If left to me, I would continue working on this book indefinitely. It’s not due to a lack of effort, but because I pour all my energy into it. The passion I have for this project, its characters, and the narrative I’m crafting is immense.

Jordan concluded her long message by expressing gratitude towards those who displayed immense kindness, using their caring words of affection.

Jordan hasn’t been shy about discussing the emotional turmoil behind her memoir; back in October, she expressed her hope that the book would provide comfort and understanding for parents experiencing struggles similar to hers.

She enthusiastically expressed that after a year-long labor of love hidden from view, she is thrilled to unveil her personal achievement – a book she has authored herself!

It’s indescribable how meaningful this moment is for me and my family, who have shared all the ups and downs of life with me, experiencing every twist and turn together, from triumphs to trials.

As I poured my heart out into these pages, I’ve shed a river of emotions – joyful tears when recalling the beautiful moments, and sorrowful ones as I grappled with the hardships. Yet, the thought that my tale might inspire others has made every single “feeling” spilled worth it. I can’t wait for you to read it!

‘I want my tale to make parents of kids with disabilities feel less isolated, more empowered, and perhaps inspire them, if they haven’t already, to view their child not just as someone with a disability but as a unique, valuable gem.’

In addition, she expressed gratitude towards her loved ones and family in a moving statement, concluding by paying an emotional tribute to her son and the memory of her deceased mother.

In conclusion, to our dear Levi, a source of immense joy, and to my dearly cherished and adored mother… I love you, she expressed.

Jordan and Gary share two other children: daughter Grace, two, and their youngest son, Ezra, one.

Jordan has been expressing affectionately about the growing closeness between Levi, Grace, and Ezra, his siblings.

“Last year in March, she shared with The Herald Sun that Grace, who’s almost 2.5 years old, has a delightful bond with her, and it’s wonderful to have Ez, who is only seven months old, around Levi since he enjoys being surrounded by kids.”

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but reflect on the joyous moments we’ve shared, yet I can’t ignore the increasing intricacies that seem to follow dear Levi, as the passing of time unveils new challenges with his condition.

‘Everyone keeps asking how he’s doing and he’s pretty much the same to be honest,’ she shared.

It seems our conversations might be becoming somewhat routine, yet it’s important to remember that as he grows older, new challenges inevitably emerge. However, we’ve been handling these situations quite well.

One Day at a Time will be published by Harper Collins on April 2, 2025.
