David Schwimmer’s Low-Key Celebration of Friends’ 30th Anniversary Amid Matthew Perry’s Death
David Schwimmer has revealed how he celebrated the 30th anniversary of iconic sitcom Friends.
Last September, the renowned TV show marked a momentous occasion, approximately a year following the sad demise of its lead actor, Matthew Perry.
58-year-old Schwimmer, famously known for portraying Ross Geller on the popular sitcom, recently shared an interesting fact during a conversation with Kent ‘Smallzy’ Small on his Smallzy’s Surgery program.
The radio host recently questioned Schwimmer about his memories of the show, while discussing the traveling exhibit of the iconic orange couch from Central Perk, a coffee shop frequently seen in the hit series “Friends,” which is currently making its way across Australia.
Smallzy mentioned that, “It’s not meant to make you feel old, but your friend’s couch is located in Australia. It’s reaching its 30th anniversary.
‘Do you reflect on when you hit a milestone like 30 years? Do you think: how did that happen?’
1 – “Are your thoughts something like, ‘Wow, this was an excellent run! I can hardly believe it.’ Or do they stray towards, ‘Gosh, I feel so old. It’s almost as if age has caught up with me.'”
2 – “Do you find yourself exclaiming, ‘What a fantastic run!’ and marveling at it, or are your thoughts more along the lines of, ‘Goodness, I feel incredibly old today. I can hardly believe it.’
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I can confidently say that I follow suit with Schwimmer when it comes to celebrating significant milestones in a subtle manner. Rather than going all out, I prefer a quiet and understated approach to mark these special moments.
It turned out that I was in Los Angeles on the anniversary of our initial broadcast, and I treated Matt LeBlanc to dinner. We looked back on old times, raised a glass to thirty years, and celebrated.
It truly astounds me. The fact that so many people continue to enjoy it, finding humor and solace in it, fills me with immense appreciation.
2024’s 30th anniversary of the popular TV show “Friends” was marred by the sad news of actor Matthew Perry’s passing, which occurred nearly a year earlier.
On October 28, 2023, at the age of 54, the charming actor known for his role as Chandler Bing in the sitcom, tragically passed away from a ketamine overdose and drowning, at his residence in Pacific Palisades.
After the star’s demise, five individuals – two medical professionals, a resident caretaker, and an accused ketamine dealer – were apprehended for their suspected involvement in the unfortunate incident.
Doctors Salvador Plasencia (age 42) and Mark Chavez (age 54), along with accused drug dealers Jasveen ‘Ketamine Queen’ Sangha (age 41), Eric Fleming (age 54), and Kenneth Iwamasa, Perry’s live-in assistant (age 59), have each been indicted for their alleged involvement.
On October 28, Perry was discovered unconscious in the hot tub at his Los Angeles residence. Later, it was ascertained that the sudden effects of ketamine led to his demise, which was the cause of his passing.
Iwamasa, my resident assistant, confessed later on that it was indeed him who provided the lethal doses to the actor. He had been trained in their administration by Plasencia.
During a special event for their show, creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane, as well as executive producer Kevin S Bright, admitted that the death of one of their stars had put a dark cloud over the celebrations.)
Kauffman remarked, “It’s a significant sorrow, and the 30th carries a certain tension.” Bright followed with, “He managed to make us laugh each day.” (This version maintains the original meaning while using simpler, more conversational language.)
Additionally, it was disclosed by sources that Perry, who had faced extensive media attention regarding his battle with substance abuse, had been making progress and improving in the time leading up to his passing.
He’d waged a valiant battle for such a prolonged period, but starting from the 2021 reunion, it seemed as though he had at last discovered tranquility. This was what he expressed.
Known by many as one of the best sitcoms ever made, Friends aired on NBC for an impressive span of ten seasons.
The main actors from the show became widely recognized as popular figures in many households – David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, and Lisa Kudrow.
As a lifestyle expert, I can attest that this particular TV show catapulted its cast members into the ranks of the wealthiest small-screen performers. The last two seasons were particularly lucrative, earning each actor an astonishing $1 million per episode – a figure that left many spectators simply amazed.
Similar to its predecessor, the final episode of the series became a significant cultural event, drawing an impressive 52.5 million viewers within the United States.
That made it the most-watched show on television since the Seinfeld finale six years prior.
To put it another way, our final episode ranked as the fifth most popular series finale of all time, trailing only behind M*A*S*H, Cheers, The Fugitive, and Seinfeld in terms of viewership.
