Birds of a Feather star Pauline Quirke reveals dementia diagnosis

Birds of a Feather star Pauline Quirke has been diagnosed with dementia, it has been announced.

The actor, famously recognized for his role in the cherished sitcom with Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph, has decided to take a break from all work-related and business commitments after receiving a diagnosis.

Steve Sheen, Pauline’s husband, announced with sadness that in light of her diagnosis of dementia in 2021, Pauline has chosen to withdraw from all work and business obligations.

Through her achievements in the film and television world, her charitable efforts, and by founding the thriving Pauline Quirke Academy of Performing Arts (PQA), Pauline has served as an inspiring figure.

He mentioned that Pauline’s acting days are over, but the PQA organization, guided by her principles, remains strong and will carry on functioning as usual.

He went on to say, “We humbly ask for respect and compassion for Pauline and us as a family, during these challenging times.

Currently, we’re choosing not to conduct interviews or issue additional comments. This is because Pauline wishes to devote her time to her loved ones, including her family, children, and grandchildren.

In 1976, Pauline was the leading actress in her comedy series called “Pauline’s Quirkes.” Later on, she became known for portraying Sharon Theodopolopodous in “Bird of a Feather” during the 1980s and 1990s, and once more in the 2010s.

Apart from that, she played Hazel Rhodes on “Emmerdale” from 2010 to 2012 and was even nominated for a BAFTA award due to her portrayal of Olive Martin in the BBC’s “The Sculptress.

Hilary Evans-Newton, CEO of Alzheimer’s Research UK, expressed sadness upon learning about Pauline’s diagnosis. They extend their heartfelt well-wishes to Pauline, Steve, and the entire family during this challenging time.

It’s commendable that the family chose to share her diagnosis openly, a bold move that not only increases their own freedom but also significantly boosts public understanding and awareness about the condition.

I’m truly thankful that Pauline and Steve have promised to back our mission at the appropriate moment. I eagerly anticipate collaborating with them to increase public understanding of dementia and gather more resources for research.

Additional details about dementia can be found through various organizations such as the NHS, Dementia UK, and in the U.S., the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
