From Shy Schoolboy to Star at Trump’s Inauguration: Christopher Macchio’s Journey
At the inauguration ceremony of President Donald Trump on Monday, America had the pleasure of discovering a fresh talent as Christopher Macchio stepped up to perform the national anthem.
46-year-old vocalist, often called “America’s Tenor” lately, was personally chosen by Trump for a performance during an event that took place in the Capitol Rotunda, where notable figures such as former Presidents Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were present.
According to Newsday, the individual from Long Island was characterized as a “formerly reserved, yet radiant treasure” who would fill his Holbrook neighborhood with the resonant tones of his voice when he sang, with the windows wide open.
It wasn’t until he was compelled to join his high school choir to meet a state graduation prerequisite that this current global vocalist unveiled his hidden talent, as reported by Newsbreak. After residing on Long Island, he pursued classical voice studies at the Manhattan School of Music and later launched his professional career with a performance in a PBS concert special.
During a pre-inauguration chat with the Associated Press, Macchio shared the story of how they became acquainted with Donald Trump nine years back.
On New Year’s Eve, I got the thrill of a lifetime when I was tapped to step in at the last moment as Elton John had to bail out from his performance at Mar-a Lago. Simply incredible!
The tenor made such an impression that Rod Stewart asked him to perform at his 70th birthday party.
After that event, Macchio has performed for Trump multiple times since, such as at a memorial service in 2020 for his sibling Robert.
He accompanied Trump during his election campaign, performing at the Republican National Convention held in July.
Additionally, he attended a rally alongside the candidate in Butler, Pennsylvania, around October, approximately four months following an attempted assassination there.
Following Macchio’s performance at Trump’s last election rally at Madison Square Garden in November, Trump told him, “I’ll catch up with you at the inauguration.” (This version maintains the original meaning but uses simpler and more conversational language.)
The artist, a known Trump supporter based on his social media activity, commented that he hadn’t clearly defined it, referring to the statement in question.
A Trump aide contacted Macchio a couple of weeks after, informing him that he had been chosen as the president-elect’s sole preference for singing the Star Spangled Banner.
Macchio was disheartened when the decision was made to hold the ceremony indoors because of the chilly weather, as he had eagerly anticipated the sight of 100,000 individuals scattered across the National Mall.
Nevertheless, he admitted that staying indoors was beneficial from a musical and vocal standpoint, since harsh weather conditions like extreme cold are unfavorable for the voice.
Despite challenges finding artists for the inauguration, Macchio was comfortable participating in the event.
He expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve our President and our nation, especially during such a crucial period in our country’s timeline, as he posted on Instagram yesterday.
Carrie Underwood and Lee Greenwood also took part in the swearing-in ceremony.
