Jeremy Piven’s Heartbreaking Farewell to Mom Joyce: Iconic Acting Teacher Dies at 94
Jeremy Piven’s mom Joyce has died at the age of 94.
The actress, who is 59 years old, posted on Instagram to announce her death and honored her acting mentor with a heartfelt message.
Sharing multiple pictures of him with his mother, he confessed that he was “struggling a bit to find his way around without her.
The beloved star from Entourage penned down that Joyce, one of the founders of the famed Piven Theatre Workshop in Evanston, maintained an air of grace right up till her final moments.
‘Joyce Piven has passed away. I had hoped this day would be postponed, but it seems fate had other plans. For those who know me, it’s clear how deeply I cherished this remarkable woman.’
Indeed, I’m fortunate to call her my mother, yet there’s no denying that she was more than just a family member – she was an extraordinary individual. To countless souls, including myself, she served not only as a mentor but also as an inspiring guide on the journey of acting. Witnessing the growth and transformation of her students brought her immense joy, and it was truly a privilege to be part of that evolution.
He further explained that she taught us to always respect the area we use during our performances, emphasizing the importance of the work’s integrity, and reminding us of our good fortune in being given the opportunity. When we practiced lines together, she would immerse herself in the character and adopt whatever accent was required.
‘Without telling her, I recorded her performance and shared it with the movie director. Surprisingly, she landed the part! Everyone thought she was too weak to perform high-flying stunts, but we went ahead with our plan.’
In a career spanning over 80 films, I’ve never witnessed such a standing ovation as she received on set. Fifteen years ago, she shared with me a short story by Arthur Miller titled “The Performance”. She held onto it for all these years until we finally turned it into a movie. She would frequently inquire about its progress. We are all remarkable beings. The film serves as a tribute to her.
The actor went on to say, ‘I’m still figuring out the path without her, but life seems to be all about change – a lesson she often taught in her acting workshops.’
‘She showed us that comedy and drama can coexist, much like in real life. Her influence extended far and wide. She didn’t teach acting merely for a career, but to help you discover more about yourself. “Endings matter” – she carried herself with grace until her final moments.’
He concluded his caption by saying, “Forever a mentor… Regardless of how much time we may have left in our human existence, it’s clear we’ve just lost an exceptional person. She is now dancing with my deceased father. Treat one another kindly.
Upon his disheartening announcement, I found numerous friends in the limelight expressing their sympathies, with Cindy Crawford, Jamie Foxx, and Piers Morgan among them.
