Disney Finally Brings the Original Digimon Into a New Streaming Era

Fans can now enjoy the classic anime in a beautifully remastered high-definition version, making it easier than ever to revisit a beloved favorite.

The Digimon series has changed a lot over the past twenty years, but the original Digimon Adventure from 1999 remains the most well-known part of the franchise. The show centers around seven kids – Tai, Matt, Sora, Izzy, Mimi, Joe, and T.K. – who are unexpectedly transported to the Digital World during summer camp. They team up with unique Digimon partners to defend both their world and the Digital World from dangerous enemies.

The story is well-known for how the challenges constantly grow. It starts with simply trying to survive, but eventually leads to a huge battle against the Four Dark Masters – four incredibly powerful villains who almost took over the Digital World.

First Digimon Adventure Anime Finds New Remastered Streaming Home on Disney+

Toei Animation has announced that the remastered HD English dub of Digimon Adventure is now available to stream on Disney+ in Canada. This is exciting news for Canadian fans, as the 54-episode series has historically been difficult to find outside of Japan. Originally released in 1999, the English dub quickly became a cultural hit, rivaling Pokémon in popularity around the year 2000.

The first Digimon Adventure anime became incredibly popular and kept fans hooked for many years. The direct follow-up, Digimon Adventure 02, brought in new characters while still featuring the original cast. While the series later explored different storylines with Tamers and Frontier, Toei Animation eventually returned to the original Adventure story with the six-part movie series, Digimon Adventure tri.

As a longtime fan, I was really excited to see where the story went in these later films, which take place six years after the original series! It was amazing to watch the DigiDestined deal with all the challenges of growing up, and it felt like they were really trying to bring the whole Adventure saga to a satisfying conclusion.

Later that year, the Digimon franchise completely restarted the original series with Digimon Adventure (2020), which featured updated animation and a revised storyline. A movie, Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning, followed in 2023. Most recently, a short film called Digimon Adventure Beyond was released for the 25th anniversary. However, the director, Hiroyuki Kakudo, has stated that there are currently no plans for further content related to the original story.

Besides streaming, people are once again buying physical copies of Digimon. Discotek Media will release more Digimon movies on Blu-ray in 2025, including titles like Revenge of Diaboromon and Digimon Tamers: Runaway Locomon. This builds on their 2024 release of the first four Digimon films, making them available to North American fans.

Starting as a popular digital pet in 1997, Digimon is still going strong with new releases. Upcoming projects like the 2025 anime Digimon Beatbreak and the RPG Digimon Story: Time Stranger demonstrate that the world of Digimon has plenty more stories to tell.
