Mayhem: The Most Extreme Bands of All Time Revealed
For time immemorial, tales of rock ‘n’ roll excess have dotted the annals of popular music history.
The wild party scenes of ’80s LA glam metal groups like Motley Crue and the excessive indulgence of bands such as Led Zeppelin and Van Halen have etched stories of reckless living on tour into the conventional image of a rock star life.
However, some musicians reside comfortably outside the mainstream’s spotlight, dwelling instead on its outskirts.
Bands so extreme that their on and off stage antics would put the aforementioned stars to shame.
Artists have sometimes taken their creative expression to radical limits, challenging authority with their actions, ranging from defying oppressive governments to engaging in violent acts like terrorism or murder.
Here is a look at some of the most outrageous and extreme musical artists of all time.
These Norwegian black metal musicians embody their moniker and have stirred up controversy since their debut.
Established in Oslo back in 1984, Mayhem gained notoriety with the addition of their enigmatic vocalist, Per Yngve Ohlin, more famously recognized as Dead, to the group.
Under the leadership of Dead, Mayhem’s live shows were notoriously intense. The charismatic frontman gained fame for his use of corpse paint and frequently performing self-harm acts such as cutting himself with knives or broken glass on stage.
1990 saw the band relocating to an antique farmhouse, where they commenced composing the tracks that later formed their groundbreaking 1992 album, titled “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.
Yet, in 1991, Dead ended his life at the farmhouse, penning a note with the opening line: ‘I apologize for the blood.’
Øystein Aarseth, also known as Eronymous and the band’s guitarist and founder, found the body and then immediately purchased a disposable camera to capture images of the surroundings.
The result wound up as the cover of a 1995 live bootleg album Dawn Of The Black Hearts.
Besides this, it’s worth noting that the band was linked to a series of arson attacks on churches happening concurrently throughout Norway.
In connection with the unveiling of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, Euronymous, along with bandmate Varg Vikernes (known also as Count Grishnackh), is said to have conspired a plan to destroy the Nidaros Cathedral, an image that was depicted on the album cover.
In August 1993, a fatal stabbing occurred in the Oslo apartment of Euronymous, as a result of an argument with Vikernes.
In my role as a lifestyle advisor, I’d like to share an unfortunate incident from the past. A man named Vikernes, who was known for his actions, found himself in legal trouble swiftly. He was taken into custody within a matter of days and was sentenced to serve 21 years behind bars – the maximum penalty in Norway. This severe sentence was imposed on him due to his involvement in both a heinous murder and arson cases targeting churches.
In 2009, he was freed from prison, and the group has persisted since then, although their current roster is not the same as before.
In 2018, the scandalous incident was transformed into the movie titled “Lords of Chaos,” featuring Rory Culkin in the role of Euronymous.
GG Allin
Born as Jesus Christ Allin, this individual residing on society’s outskirts became known as ‘the most remarkable deviant in the annals of rock and roll’.
Throughout his turbulent existence, the punk rocker led numerous bands, among them being The Murder Junkies, a group he formed alongside his sibling Merle.
Rather than being famous for his music recordings, GG Allin’s performances were infamous for their extremely provocative behavior. Attending one of his shows was definitely not suitable for sensitive or timid individuals.
Frequently, the performances involved acts such as self-harm, simulating bodily functions on stage, and attacking spectators, leading to his incarceration several times.
Or:
The acts in the shows were quite extreme, featuring self-injury, mock defecation, and even targeting audience members, resulting in him serving time in prison on multiple instances.
1989 saw the arrest of GG, who faced accusations for an assault aimed at causing severe physical injury, short of murder, on a woman he knew.
In a plea deal, GG admitted guilt for a less severe charge of aggravated battery instead of attempted murder, and served his sentence in prison from Christmas Day, 1989, until late March, 1991.
Using unconventional song and album names like “Hated In The Nation,” “Anti-Social Personality Disorder,” and “I Wanna Kill You,” GG clearly sought to distance himself from the mainstream music scene.
The controversial punk died of a heroin overdose in 1993.
Pussy Riot
Back in the day, when she was just 22 years old, Nadya Tolokonnikova established this Russian collective of performance art punks known for its dynamic female members who frequently changed, totaling 11 women at one point.
Unyielding in their willingness to challenge boundaries, this group emerged as a counterpoint to what they perceived as suppressive political policies under President Vladimir Putin’s administration in Russia. They advocate strongly for expanded freedoms, particularly for women and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
I can’t help but feel a thrill running through me as I join forces with like-minded enthusiasts, taking our rebellious spirit to the heart of the city. We’ve been sneaking into the Moscow underground and setting up impromptu performances in the most unexpected places – from the subway stations to the very steps of the Kremlin itself. It’s a daring game, but the rush we get from defying the norm and sharing our message with the world is simply unmatched!
In 2012, they gained global notice as five of their members performed an act within the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow.
The tune titled ‘Punk Prayer’ emerged as a pointed reaction to the religious leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church endorsing Putin during his presidential campaign.
The performance appealed to the Virgin Mary to ‘dismiss Putin,’ and it was swiftly labeled as sacrilege by the church.
Consequently, the trio comprising of Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich spent a period of five months behind bars prior to their trial after they were taken into custody.
The trio was found guilty of instigating riots fueled by religious bias and received a sentence of two years’ imprisonment.
As a lifestyle guide, I’d put it this way: Two months following my sentencing, I was fortunate enough to have my appeal granted and secure probation as my release. On the other hand, Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina found their freedom in 2013, having served 21 months within the confines of a correctional facility.
Despite being scattered across various locations due to their exodus from Russia, the group persists in their protests against the Putin administration, even though they do so from a distance.
Rockb****
Regarding electrifying live shows featuring raw rock music, this primarily female British band often ranks near the summit as the most daring and audacious performers.
Established by Amanda Smith-Skinner, also known as “the B***,” and Tony Skinner, who went by “the Beast,” in the year 1984, this community was home to its residents, who followed a matriarchal, polyamorous, and feminist lifestyle in France.
They quickly gained notoriety for their live shows which saw members perform completely naked.
Apart from performing intimate acts among themselves, they’d involve audience participants as well, utilizing a device they referred to as the ‘Golden Condom’, during their live shows.
During the performance, a condom was casually tossed into the crowd. The spectator who managed to catch it was escorted backstage for an intimate encounter with the band afterwards.
As they ensured they didn’t violate any laws during their performances in different areas, it was no surprise that their adult-only show attracted notice from the British police. They also encountered strong resistance from local authorities in the towns they visited.
Due to fewer places being open to host their controversial performances and the band’s record label pushing for a more tamed act, they ultimately disbanded in 2002.
