Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith, and Cheryl Ladd, the original stars of Charlie’s Angels, reunited on Monday to mark the show’s 50th anniversary.
The three stars came together at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood for a PaleyFest LA event, where the people behind popular TV shows – both actors and creators – gather for discussions and Q&As.
Jackson, Smith, and Ladd, all in their seventies, looked remarkably young as they appeared on the red carpet, 45 years after their show ended in 1981.
The actresses reminisced about the famous show following Smith’s recent announcement that she’s writing a memoir detailing her journey to stardom and her time on Charlie’s Angels.
Jackson smiled brightly on the red carpet, wearing a sleek black suit with subtle stripes, a white top, and black sneakers.
Smith contrasted her dark ensemble and added a splash of color with a pale pink satin suit.
She completed the look with a coordinating blouse and wore lavender open-toe heels, which highlighted her bright red nails. She stood confidently, completing the outfit.
Ladd chose a vibrant outfit, pairing an orange-cream jacket with flowing beige pants and open-toe heels.
The women were supported on the red carpet by family members.
I’ve always admired how Smith and Brad Allen have supported each other. They’ve been married since 1997, and Brad was always there for her. I remember seeing him that day – he looked so sharp in a navy sport coat, a light blue shirt, and gray trousers. He always had a classic style.
Ladd was also supported by her two daughters, Lindsay Walker and Jordan Ladd.
Walker looked great in a colorful halter jumpsuit, while her sister wore a little black dress with interesting patterned details and brown heels.
Jackson and Smith were both part of the show’s original cast, alongside Farrah Fawcett, who sadly passed away in 2009 at the age of 62.
After Fawcett departed after the first season, singer-turned-actor David Ladd stepped in to finish out the show.
Smith remained with the show until it ended after five seasons, but Jackson grew frustrated with what she felt were poorly written scripts.
She became even more frustrated when she was cast in the lead role of ‘Kramer vs. Kramer’ (1979), but the producers of ‘Charlie’s Angels’ wouldn’t adjust the filming schedule for the third season to let her take the part.
Originally offered to Jackson, the part ultimately went to Meryl Streep, launching her to widespread recognition and earning her the first Oscar of her career.
Jackson later confessed that she became very upset and disruptive on the set of Charlie’s Angels, which resulted in her being fired after the third season.
Shelley Hack, known for her role in The King of Comedy, took over the part in the fourth season. However, she was then replaced by Tanya Roberts (That ’70s Show) for the show’s final season. Roberts sadly passed away in 2021 at the age of 71. Notably, Hack did not attend Monday’s panel discussion.
Because the original Charlie’s Angels TV show remained popular, two movies were made in 2000 and 2003. These films featured Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu as a fresh team of detectives solving crimes.
The series was briefly brought back to ABC in 2011, but it didn’t last long. It was revived once more in 2019 with a new movie featuring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska.
Despite being written and directed by Elizabeth Banks, the movie received a mixed reception and didn’t do well in theaters, ending plans for potential sequels.
Even though the previous movie didn’t do well, Deadline announced in February that a new Charlie’s Angels film is in development, with Pete Chiarelli – known for writing ‘The Proposal’ – working on the script.
