During the closed beta testing, I had the pleasure of trying out Netmarble’s Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, and I was pleasantly surprised by how excellent it was! From its nostalgic tunes to its captivating storyline, this game has truly hit the mark. Here are my initial thoughts on it.

After a long wait of three whole years, I’ve finally got my hands on a playable build of the game! Although the Closed Beta Test is still running for a few more days, you can download “GOT Kingsroad” right now onto your Android device and join me in this exciting journey.

The original Game of Thrones flavour in a new shape

If you’ve been yearning for the world of Westeros, this game could draw you back into the heart of the action. From the very beginning, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad evokes a familiar, nostalgic feeling. The music, the ambiance, and the storyline seem like they were taken directly from the original series.

In the realm of the Seven Kingdoms, you encounter House Tyre, a dwelling specifically designed for this captivating game. As an ardent enthusiast of the series, I must express that the narrative exudes an undeniable authenticity. It seems as though they’ve successfully bottled the spirit of George R.R. Martin’s universe.

In its beta stage, the game offers a genuine immersion experience. Each dialogue exchange and cutscene exudes the essence of Game of Thrones. The characters you engage with seem authentic to the series’ lore, and the story structure hints at the possibility of competing with some top-tier RPG narratives. You encounter Jon Snow within the initial half hour.

Despite being in its beta stage, some parts of the experience can seem hurried, and there’s potential to enhance the connection between narrative aspects and game mechanics. Additionally, there may be instances without voiceovers, and occasionally, the lip-syncing could use refinement. However, overall, it shows promising foundations for future development.

A few things are unpolished and need serious attention

Initially, I find that the combat in Game of Thrones: Kingsroad seems rough around the edges for now. Although it offers combinations and skills to link consecutively, the performance is somewhat awkward.

In many contemporary mobile games, there’s an expectation for smooth transitions between attacks. However, you might encounter situations where your attacks seem disjointed from the gameplay, leading to repetitive moves that feel disconnected from the action on screen. Although the animations are acceptable, they don’t effectively portray the impact or intensity of battles, which can disrupt immersion.

It’s clear that the graphics in mobile games require some substantial enhancement. I’ve played on the OnePlus 12R with high settings and compared it to the graphics on a PC, and there’s a noticeable gap between the two. Since Netmarble has introduced cross-play for shared enjoyment, it would be beneficial to focus on upgrading mobile graphics before proceeding with the global launch.

Another point to note is the importance of exploration. The map in this game is vast, offering numerous places to venture into. However, the movement controls might seem rigid at times, which could potentially hinder the enjoyment of the intricately designed settings.

Game of Thrones: Kingsroad brings full-fledged RPG experience

This game boasts a rich variety of choices and detailed mechanisms, demonstrating its richness and intricacy. But for beginners in RPGs or those new to the genre, it may seem difficult when they first start playing. With so many systems, it can feel daunting at the outset, yet this complexity contributes to the game’s lasting allure.

As a gamer, diving into this game feels like unlocking a treasure trove of possibilities. From tweaking my skills and abilities, to fine-tuning my gear, there’s something new around every corner. It might take me a solid week just to wrap my head around all the mechanics this game offers. For mobile gamers, if Netmarble gets the optimization right for the global launch, it could be a real gem in our pockets!

Here’s my initial take on Game of Thrones: Kingsroad – given that it’s still in beta testing, there’s a strong likelihood that some of its rough spots will be smoothed out before the full release. If you’re a fan of the original series, I’d recommend keeping an interested eye on this one.
