The popular Dick Wolf TV franchise is growing! A new show, CIA, will be joining FBI on Monday nights. While FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International have been cancelled, CBS has announced a crossover event. A character from FBI will appear in the first episode of CIA, officially linking the two series, despite earlier suggestions they would be separate.
The new drama series features Tom Ellis, known from Lucifer, as Colin Glass, a CIA agent with a bit of a mischievous side. Nick Gehlfuss, returning to the Law & Order universe, plays FBI Agent Bill Goodman. Originally, the show was intended as a way to introduce a character to the main FBI series, potentially titled FBI: CIA, but those plans were canceled. As a result, Gehlfuss’s character never appeared on FBI, and the show’s creator confirmed it’s a completely separate entity, just as distinct from FBI as Law & Order is.
I’m so excited! CBS just released a description for the next episode, and it turns out Jeremy Sisto is coming back as Jubal Valentine! I honestly didn’t know if he’d survive that crazy cliffhanger at the end of last season, but it looks like he did! Here’s what we can expect from the premiere…
A highly confidential weapon is stolen from a defense contractor right in broad daylight, prompting the CIA to launch an investigation. CIA agent Colin Glass is teamed up with FBI agent Bill Goodman to solve the case. Although they clash at first, the two agents discover that their different perspectives could be exactly what they need, as seen in the premiere episode of the series.
Don’t get too hopeful yet – Jubal might only appear briefly via video call, similar to how Jeremy Sisto and Alana De La Garza occasionally appeared in FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted. He wasn’t shown in the first preview of the new show’s main characters. However, even a small role for Jubal confirms that the worlds of FBI and CIA now officially exist in the same shared New York City universe, connecting the case that brings Agents Glass and Goodman together.
There was some talk that Mike Weiss, the showrunner for FBI, might take over CIA after that show lost its leader. However, Weiss quickly told TopMob that he didn’t want to combine the worlds of FBI and Law & Order with any crossover episodes.
Even as these shows evolve, fans can enjoy knowing that all the series produced by Wolf Entertainment technically share the same television universe. Connections were established through crossovers – first between One Chicago and Law & Order: SVU in 2014, and later when a Chicago P.D. character appeared on FBI in 2020. This creates a link between Law & Order, One Chicago, FBI, and now CIA. It’s not a commonly used connection, but it does exist!
While you won’t see characters from Law & Order or the other CBS dramas in the upcoming One Chicago crossover, and big two-part episodes between FBI and CIA aren’t planned, I’m excited to see Jeremy Sisto guest star when the shows debut. It’s still too early to know exactly how connected these two CBS series will be moving forward.
Get ready for more crime dramas on CBS’ Monday nights! The new series CIA will debut on February 23rd at 10 p.m. Eastern, right after the return of FBI, which features a wedding. CIA, starring Nick Gehlfuss and Tom Ellis, will take the place of Watson on Mondays, and Watson will now air on Sundays.
