Wendy Williams declares, ‘I am not cognitively impaired,’ disputing guardian’s assertions

Last year, this person declared that I, formerly a popular TV host, am suffering from cognitive impairment, permanent disability, and legal incapacitation. However, I firmly believe in my mental acuity and ability to make decisions for myself.

60-year-old daytime talk show host declared on Thursday morning: “I am not suffering from cognitive impairment.” Williams and her niece Alex Finnie made troubling claims regarding Williams’ care, during a call to the “The Breakfast Club” radio program, which were focused on guardian Sabrina Morrissey.

“I feel like I’m imprisoned,” Williams said.

In the year 2022, Williams found himself under the management of a financial guardian due to an ongoing legal dispute with Wells Fargo. Later in that same year, “The Wendy Williams Show” broadcast its last episode after running for 13 seasons. The daily program came to an end amidst the host’s health, emotional, and financial difficulties.

Since the year 2022, it’s been reported that Williams has been undergoing treatment at an undisclosed location – often referred to as a high-end detention center in New York – according to her niece. In a recent interview with “The Breakfast Club”, both Williams and Finnie discussed the tight security at this facility and leveled accusations against Morrissey for allegedly restricting Williams’ access to her loved ones.

Last year, Morrissey’s position as Wendy Williams’ legal guardian drew media focus before Lifetime’s four-part documentary “Where Is Wendy Williams?” was set to air. Prior to its February debut, it was revealed that Williams had been diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. In the same week, Morrissey filed a lawsuit against the makers of the documentary, including Lifetime’s parent company A+E Networks. At that point, Morrissey sought a temporary injunction to halt the release of the documentary, but the New York court allowed Lifetime to move forward with its plans.

On Thursday, Williams avoided discussing the documentary, expressing discomfort about revisiting it (“I don’t feel like reliving that experience again,” “I prefer not to discuss that”) and emphasizing her mental abilities. In a court document filed in September, Morrissey asserted that Williams lacked the ability to agree to be filmed for the Lifetime documentary due to her dementia and aphasia diagnoses, suggesting she was cognitively compromised.

“How dare,” Williams said Thursday. “Do I seem that way?”

She added: “For the last three years, I have been caught up in the system.”

According to Wendy William’s son, the family is making efforts to bring Wendy home as soon as possible because isolation at the treatment center seems to be affecting her health more rapidly than any other factor.

Finnie, openly critical of her aunt’s guardian, urged “The Breakfast Club” audience to disseminate information about Williams’ ordeal and take steps to ensure that her aunt lives with dignity. She appealed to those caring for Williams to grant her the liberty she is entitled to.

Prior to the arrival of the new year, Williams went to her son Kevin Hunter Jr.’s graduation ceremony at college. Williams expressed a desire to spend some quality time with her family during this period to celebrate her father’s 94th birthday. However, she hinted, seemingly on the verge of tears, that Morrissey might not be agreeable to this plan. “My life is becoming increasingly chaotic,” Williams said.

In a statement issued last Thursday, I, Roberta Kaplan, attorney for Morrissey in the lawsuit against A&E, reinforced concerns raised by The Guardian in September regarding Williams’ cognitive abilities. I stated that a state court had determined she was legally incapacitated, implying she lacks the capacity to make her own legal and financial decisions.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m compelled to express my thoughts on Wendy’s situation. Regrettably, her diagnosis signifies a progressive decline over time, necessitating lifelong care. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that like many others with dementia, she experiences both good and challenging days.

It’s disheartening to observe the excessive scrutiny surrounding her currently. This attention unfortunately risks repeating the exploitative practices we’ve criticized in so-called documentaries, as claimed in our complaint.

At the conclusion of her “Breakfast Club” interview, Finnie critically spoke about the flawed guardianship system. Recently, Hunter too expressed worry about his mother’s situation, telling fans that she is now sober and wishes to return home.
