Aaliyah Barbie Doll Sells Out in Minutes, Fans Outraged!
Fans of Aaliyah are enraged as pre-orders for a commemorative Barbie doll, honoring the late artist, quickly ran out on the day that would have marked her 46th birthday.
Born on January 16, the gifted R&B artist met an untimely end at just 22 years old when a tragic plane crash occurred in the Bahamas back in 2001.
In celebration of her birthday, Mattel has made the collector’s doll available for pre-orders, and starting from January 26, these dolls will be officially back in stock at Target stores.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about the incredible collaboration between Barbie’s design team and Rashad Haughton, Aaliyah’s brother, to create an outfit that echoes one of her iconic looks from her 1996 music video for “One In A Million”. It feels surreal to see this tribute to a true style icon come to life!
Instead, numerous social media users flocked to express their annoyance about the unavailability of the doll from the Music Collector Series, as they could not buy it.
One wrote, ‘Why did everybody purchase the Aaliyah Barbie doll? It really annoys me! I had planned to buy it as a gift for my nieces, and you all are so bothersome.’
I can’t help but echo their sentiments! It seems the Barbie Aaliyah doll has flown off the shelves, leaving me yearning for one. As an ardent admirer of Aaliyah, it feels right that this doll should be reserved exclusively for us millennials and Gen Xers who grew up enchanted by her timeless charm.
‘I’m really not shocked Aaliyah’s Barbie Doll sold out within 30min,’ an X user also shared.
One commented, ‘It’s essential they produce more of the Aaliyah Barbie doll. It ought to remain available throughout the year, as it’s hard to believe!’ or

The request Aaliyah made was quite surprising. The Barbie doll modeled after her was snapped up in no time at all, and even the pre-orders for the next batch have already been sold out. And yes, I too wanted one.
‘I really wanted the Aaliyah Barbie doll! Unfortunately, it was snapped up in just seconds when it went on sale at 5 am. I feel both sad for myself and happy for her estate because she truly deserves it!’ (1/16)
‘Them resellers for that Aaliyah Barbie are going to try to have a field day,’ a fan shared on X.
One fan expressed, ‘WHY DIDNT ANYONE TELL ME THAT BARBIE WAS DROPPING AN AALIYAH DOLL?!!!!!’
Just recently, I discovered that a Barbie doll modeled after Aaliyah is being released today, her birthday, and it has already sold out. Another person shared this information.
Being part of the generation that grooved to “Are You That Somebody,” I’d have thoroughly enjoyed this.
On both the Target and Mattel sites, you’ll find the message “Out of Stock” displayed below the primary description for the special edition doll.
In the Music Collector Series, you’ll find Barbie alongside musical icons like Stevie Nicks and David Bowie. The cost of the Aaliyah figurine is set at $55 in stores.
The deceased musician’s sibling, Rashad, played a part in creating the outfit for the doll, featuring a crop-top made of leather and boasting cuts on the front, along with coordinating trousers.
Barbie dons a cropped zip-up vest along with black boots and gloves that extend to her elbows but have openings for her fingers as well.
As a kid, I clearly recall my sister spending countless hours engaging with her beloved Barbie dolls. She’d have them sing, dance, and even put on miniature concerts, as she reminisced in an article by The Hollywood Reporter.
My sister would absolutely delight in this tribute to her legacy, as it encourages fans to aim high and have faith in their ability to become whatever their hearts yearn for.
In their own words, Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Head of Dolls at Mattel, made a statement as well.
‘It’s our expectation that the Aaliyah Barbie doll will inspire her devoted followers and collectors alike, reminding them that, just as Aaliyah did, they too can unlock their boundless abilities and accomplish whatever they aspire to, by nurturing their passions and determination.’
Aaliyah gained fame by putting out several successful tracks during her music career, such as “One In A Million,” “Back & Forth,” and “At Your Best.
The deceased celeb earned numerous honors, such as three American Music Prizes and two MTV Video Music Trophies.
Additionally, she received numerous nominations, including five Grammy Awards and four recognition for the Billboard Music Awards.
As a devoted admirer recounting events from the past, I was 15 when I, unfortunately, entered into an illegal marriage with R Kelly, who was then 27. This union was eventually dissolved. At the time of my untimely demise, I was in a relationship with Damon Dash, one of the founders of Roc-A-Fella Records.
Apart from gaining recognition, she additionally starred in movies like Romeo Must Die (released in 2000) and Queen of the Damned (premiered in 2002).
In August 2001, following the filming of the song “Rock The Boat” music video in the Bahamas, a group of nine individuals, including Aaliyah, embarked on a Cessna 402 airplane at Marsh Harbour Airport, located in the Abaco Islands.
Immediately following its departure, the aircraft suffered a catastrophic accident, causing it to burst into flames. Regrettably, everyone aboard, including the pilot, perished in the incident.
