Renée Zellweger explains why she returned as Bridget Jones after 8 years
Renee Zellweger shares why she decided to play Bridget Jones again, following an eight-year hiatus.
Initially, the Academy Award-winning actress played the well-known clumsy romantic character in the 2001 movie “Bridget Jones’s Diary.” Later, she reprised her role in 2004 with “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,” and more recently, in 2016, she appeared in “Bridget Jones’ Baby.
During a conversation with British Vogue prior to the release of “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” in UK theaters on Valentine’s Day, the actor shared the reasons behind her return for a fourth film installment.
She stated straightforwardly to Hugh Grant, also known as Daniel Cleaver, that she deeply cares for her. Moreover, she emphasized that the story isn’t over yet. As long as Helen Fielding writes, she remains alive. How much detail can be shared about it?
In a reflective moment, Judy pondered over what she thinks keeps her movies so captivating and desired by fans even after more than two decades.
She commented, “It seems many people exclaim, ‘I feel like Bridget Jones!’ Isn’t it because they see aspects of themselves in her and empathize with her battles and moments of self-questioning?
Bridget is genuine and true to who she is, sometimes making mistakes along the way. Yet, despite her flaws, she maintains a spirit of happiness and positivity. She perseveres, finding success in her unique manner.
The novel “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” is derived from a book by Helen Fielding, sharing the same title, which was published in 2013.
For individuals unfamiliar with the storyline, they will discover that Bridget is residing in London once more, now single following the heartbreaking demise of her partner Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth), which occurred four years earlier.
I’m not only a mom to Bridget, but I’ve also got two wonderful kids of my own – Billy who’s nine, and Mabel who’s four. As always, I can count on my “Urban Family” – Shazzer, Jude, and Tom (portrayed by Sally Phillips, Shirley Henderson, and James Callis) – for their unwavering support.
Additionally, we encounter Miranda, a work associate played by Sarah Solemani, and Dr. Rawlings, portrayed by Emma Thompson, who have stayed connected with Bridget since their initial meeting in the third movie.
Currently managing work, home life, and romance, Bridget faces criticism from the idealistic moms at school, frets over Billy as he deals with his father’s absence, and navigates a string of uncomfortable encounters with her son’s overly logical science teacher, according to the movie summary.
In the fourth instalment, we have Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall (from “One Day”) joining Doctor Strange’s cast as Bridget’s two fresh love interests. Notably, Hugh Grant makes a comeback, reprising his character Daniel Cleaver from earlier films, having missed out on the third one due to script-related matters.
The movie ‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’ is set to hit UK theaters on Valentine’s Day, February 14. In the United States, it will premiere a day earlier, on February 13, and can only be watched exclusively on Peacock.
