It’s likely that devotees of Tom Cruise are familiar with his unions with Katie Holmes and Nicole Kidman; however, it’s understandable if some might overlook his initial spouse, as her life has taken quite a unique turn.

At the height of his career as a prominent actor in Top Gun, Tom, who is currently 62 years old, stealthily tied the knot with Florida-born actress Mimi Rogers. The ceremony was an intimate affair, with just two individuals present as they exchanged their vows.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but share a fascinating piece of information about my beloved idol, Tom Cruise. You see, there’s this remarkable woman named Mimi, now 68, who’s not only a skilled poker player but is believed to have played a pivotal role in introducing Tom to Scientology – a faith that has significantly shaped the discourse surrounding the Mission Impossible star throughout his illustrious career.

Their relationship didn’t last long and ended in 1989, only a few days prior to when Tom began shooting Days of Thunder. During that movie, he encountered Nicole Kidman, who eventually became his second spouse.

Overwhelmed by nostalgia, I can’t help but be captivated once more by the iconic image of my beloved couple at the 2000 Vanity Fair Oscar Party in West Hollywood, with Nicole casually puffing on a cigarette that seems to echo the smoldering passion we all felt for them back then. This timeless snapshot has resurfaced this week and served as a stark reminder that their charm and allure remain undiminished, even twenty years after their separation. While Nicole continues to shine brightly in the spotlight, Mimi appears to have gracefully stepped out of the bustling Hollywood landscape.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but observe the stark contrast between Mimi’s reel life in Bosch on Prime Video and her real life, as revealed through her social media posts. Far from the glamorous world of her on-screen marriage to Tom, it seems her everyday existence is a whole different story.

Apart from her television career, Mimi also ventures into an unconventional field – participating in county fairs with her homemade hay, and to supplement her income, she records customized video messages through the platform Cameo.

In 1985, Tom and Mimi initially crossed paths when Tom was working on the movie “Top Gun”. However, their memories about their first meetings are quite different, as you might expect.

In 1986, when the actor was 23 years old, he shared with Rolling Stone that he had met Mimi, who was 29, approximately a year prior at a social gathering. Yet, it was later disclosed that she was in a relationship with one of his friends at that time.

‘I thought she was extremely bright,’ Tom said.

According to Mimi, the account of events seems to differ, since she earlier shared with Sun Sentinel that she and Tom were introduced through mutual acquaintances.

She remembered thinking, “Both of us being single, maybe it’s time for them to find companionship together.” So, we agreed, “Well, why not? Let’s give it a try.”

Because Tom was extremely well-known, he and Mimi chose to have a low-key wedding, and they exchanged vows in 1987 at a tiny, private, and lovely ceremony, with only two individuals present as witnesses.

They are said to have called their wedding day “The Project,” and they took their vows with the actor from The Mighty Ducks, Emilio Estevez, serving as the best man.

In the past, Mimi warmly recalled their shared moments when she said to the Chicago Tribune in 1988: “Marriage brings a great deal of happiness and peace. I wholeheartedly endorse it.

However, she later spoke about how marriage to Cruise did nothing to boost her career prospects.

She had a father who was among the founding members of the church, held a significant position, and maintained a close relationship with the church’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard, also known as a leading Mission Holder.

What’s more, her first marriage was to a Scientology counsellor named Jim Rogers. 

During an interview with the LA Times, Rogers shared that her philosophical outlook was deeply rooted in her upbringing. She mentioned that her father, who was a civil engineer, had already joined the church prior to her birth.

She commented that growing up with the beliefs of Scientology was truly beneficial since it provides a highly practical approach to turning abstract spiritual matters into daily practices.

After parting ways with the religion, speculations suggest that Mimi abandoned her religious beliefs, whereas her father was allegedly labeled as a ‘suppressive individual’ following his departure in the early 1980s, Tom, however, continues to be one of the most well-known followers of the church.

1989 saw Tom filing for divorce from Mimi, a move made only two years into their marriage. The divorce was officially concluded in the following year.

In the biography “Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography” by Andrew Morton, it’s stated that Tom decided to divorce right before the commencement of filming “Days of Thunder,” a project in which he was set to act alongside Nicole Kidman, who eventually became his second spouse.

In a joint announcement about their separation, Tom and Mimi stated that while there were indeed pleasant moments in their marriage, regrettably, certain challenges arose that we couldn’t overcome, despite our efforts to address them over an extended duration.

In the days leading up to their separation, Tom had nothing but praise for his partner, expressing this to Rolling Stone by saying, “I believe it has made me a more effective actor.

After their separation, Mimi disclosed that her intimate relationship with Tom had become less frequent as their marriage approached its end.

In 1993, she shared with Playboy that Tom was genuinely considering a life as a monk. For a while, it seemed like marriage wasn’t aligning with his spiritual aspirations at the time.
