BBC confirms Gary Lineker replacement on Match of the Day

The BBC has confirmed who will replace Gary Lineker on Match of the Day.

In November, it was made official that the ex-football player, who’s been hosting the BBC football highlights program since 1999, will step down from his position at the conclusion of this current season.

Starting from the upcoming season, it’s official that the BBC has decided to share the position of the main presenter among three individuals: Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman, and Gabby Logan, who will all take turns in this role.

Speaking of which, Logan, a key figure in BBC’s rugby and athletics broadcasts, emphasized that it’s crucial for us to keep progressing, all the while preserving the cherished customs of “Match of the Day”.

She mentioned that what people are interested in seeing are the significant events, such as goals, notable incidents, and topics of conversation. Although we can make minor adjustments, the fundamental aspect that captures everyone’s attention is the game of football itself.

In her continued position at Sky Sports, Cates expressed: “When I take my seat and hear the theme music, I can’t help but feel it’s going to be a truly special moment. I’ve collaborated with many of the analysts before, and they are all exceptional talents, so I’m eagerly anticipating the kickoff.

Chapman expressed his sentiment by saying: “I am well-versed in many radio and television programs, and I consider it an honor to carry on their legacy, acknowledging and appreciating the remarkable work they’ve accomplished.

Although Gary Lineker is relinquishing his role on Match of the Day, he will carry on working with the BBC, spearheading their coverage for the 2026 World Cup and hosting the BBC Sport’s broadcast of the FA Cup during the 2025/26 season.

The presenter will carry on with the “MOTD Top Ten” podcast, meanwhile the BBC will broadcast his “The Rest Is Football” podcast on BBC Sounds.

The presenter plans to move forward with the “MOTD Top Ten” podcast, and the BBC intends to air his “The Rest Is Football” podcast on BBC Sounds.

Match of the Day airs on Saturdays on BBC One.
