Iconic Sydney venue announces shock closure after 12 years

After a run of 12 years, the popular Sydney cocktail establishment, Bondi Hardware, has declared its intention to shut down.

In the year 2010, the well-known establishment got a new ownership from the duo, Ben Carroll and Hamish Watts, the masterminds behind Applejack Hospitality. They transformed the previous hardware store into a stylish eatery with a rustic charm.

They sold the business in 2018 and it continued to trade as normal under the new ownership.

Indeed, the location has officially announced that it will close permanently, owing to financial difficulties.

They shared on Instagram that after 12 remarkable years of providing great moments – bottomless brunches, cocktails, Sunday dinners, live performances, first meetings and even weddings, it’s now time for us to part ways.

Similar to numerous establishments within the hospitality sector, we’ve encountered our fair share of difficulties. These have included adapting to the repercussions of COVID-19, dealing with escalating living expenses, and experiencing hikes in food, beverage, utility, and rental costs.

With a termination clause in our contract potentially threatening our long-term success, we’ve had to make the tough and heartbreaking choice to shut down our business.

People familiar with the challenges of managing a small business, particularly those in the hospitality sector during these times, can empathize with the emotional strain and sorrow behind our recent silence. This is because we’ve been grappling with the significant impact of a major setback that we’ve had to endure.

‘It’s certainly not how we wanted it to end.’

They also thanked the ‘incredible community’ and ‘amazing staff’ for their support over the years.

‘Signing off with endless gratitude for the amazing ride that we’ve had,’ the post ended.

I, being part of this community, saw an influx of fellow locals and influential figures in our social circles, voicing their surprise and disbelief as they commented on the sudden closure of our beloved restaurant.

I’m really sad to see it close down, as there are thousands of precious moments shared here. Thank you for providing such a fantastic place where we could gather throughout the years. Everyone connected with this venue will truly be missed.

‘Jana Hocking stated, “Bondi Hardware holds many of my cherished memories, both clear and a bit hazy, for it has had an excellent run.”‘

‘Noooo! End of an era. So many incredible nights and memories,’ another person commented.

10 years ago, Bondi Hardware was my beloved neighborhood hangout when I first relocated to Sydney. It’s disheartening to hear that it’s closing down; the local community will certainly feel its absence.

The person commented: “We’ve made so many memories over these 12 years, it’s been amazing! Thank you for all the joy we shared. Sending you a giant virtual hug.
