IndyCar announcement leaves one team with an empty seat for 2025

2025 saw Dale Coyne Racing as the sole IndyCar team yet to finalize their driving roster, since no drivers had been publicly assigned to either of their two Honda-equipped race cars.

2024 marked my team’s return to racing without a full-time driver since 2015, and let me tell you, it wasn’t a season we were proud of. It had been five long years since our last podium finish, and unfortunately, that streak continued in 2024. We didn’t manage to cross the finish line in any race within the top 12, which, believe it or not, hadn’t happened since Dale Coyne himself was behind the wheel back in 1987. It wasn’t our finest hour, but we learned a lot and are eager to bounce back stronger next season!

2025 marks a significant year for Dale Coyne Racing as they’ve secured at least one full-time driver. Jacob Abel, who finished second in the 2024 Indy NXT championship, has joined forces with them. This young talent from Louisville, Kentucky will be behind the wheel of the No. 51 Honda for the entire 17-race season ahead. Last season, he managed to win an impressive three races.

Among the 25 chartered race entries, the No. 51 Honda stands out as a constant participant in all scheduled races, with the exception of the Indy 500’s 109th running at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Unlike Prema Racing’s two full-time cars, it is not a chartered vehicle and thus, it competes as a full-time entry among the other 27 entries on the circuit.

The 26 full-time entries with confirmed drivers are all set to be driven by full-time drivers in 2025.

In simpler terms, Coyne verifying Abel implies only one full-time driving position remains unconfirmed in the 2025 lineup, and this open spot is for the No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda team.

2025 racing season still has many vacant driving positions available, providing Dale Coyne Racing with numerous potential choices. They aim to reveal their No. 18 Honda driver within the next three weeks, preferably securing a full-time driver instead of multiple part-timers.

2024’s Rookie of the Year, Linus Lundqvist, finds himself in contention for top positions, following his departure from Chip Ganassi Racing due to their reduction from five to three racing cars as part of a new charter system implementation.

It’s being said that Rinus VeeKay, who had a test run with Dale Coyne Racing on the Indianapolis oval following the 2024 season, is also being looked at as a potential candidate. Notably, VeeKay claimed victory at the Indianapolis road course in 2021, but was let go by Ed Carpenter Racing after five seasons.

The 2025 IndyCar season is planned to kick off on Sunday, March 2, with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Live broadcasts will be available from the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida, starting at 12:00 p.m. ET, provided by Fox.
