Starfield Was Originally Way More Violent, Says Ex-Bethesda Artist
Starfield, Bethesda’s spacefaring R.P.G., was originally going to feature much more gory violence.
According to Dennis Mejillones, a former artist at Bethesda, he played a part in the creation process of Starfield.
In our conversation, we’re delving into beheadings, explosions of bodies realistically portrayed, items named “meat caps,” it’s quite intense. Mejillones discussed this on the Kiwi Talkz podcast (as reported by VGC), and he elaborated on the various mechanisms controlling the game’s violent content.
He remarks, “There are many consequences associated with the varying suits.” Technically speaking, it’s quite complex. For instance, if you want to remove the helmet, it needs to be cut in a specific manner, and it must detach, and there should be padding at the base where the flesh is located for safety purposes.
Initially, we had systems in place, but they became an intricate mess of details to manage due to various additions like complex hoses on helmets. Over time, the character creator also underwent significant changes, which might have contributed to the complexity.
It’s worth noting that the intense violence might not align perfectly with the tone of Starfield. Unlike Fallout, which uses violence in a more satirical and humorous manner, Starfield isn’t as heavily reliant on such themes.
Mejillones commented, “Fallout has a unique style, and that’s intentional. It incorporates elements of humor, like the ‘Bloody Mess’ perk where you can turn someone into a mess of goo. This is all part of the amusing aspect of the game.
Take a look at our Starfield review, where Dan expresses that the game represents an ideal blend of exceptional and imperfect qualities. He points out that its open-world is simply breathtaking, yet its character animations and dialogues could use improvement, and perhaps be more modern.
