New Bluey fan theory emerges about timeline of hit children’s show amid global success

A new theory about popular Australian animated children’s show Bluey has stirred up fans.

Based on a keen observer’s claim, the animated show revolving around a charming clan of blue heelers is apparently set during the early 2000s.

Furthermore, this enthusiast asserts that they have deduced the ‘character ages’ by analyzing specific plot details.

Since the series premiered back in 2018, viewers have often questioned the age of Bandit, the dad of Bluey (who’s 7) and Bingo (5).

In the series, it’s been six years since either child’s character celebrated a birthday on screen, leaving viewers curious about when exactly the show takes place, sparking queries online about the specific year of the storyline.

As a devoted fan, I took to the Adult Bluey Facebook page to express my thoughts and share some intriguing ‘hints’ that bolster my theory following the season three finale, Surprise.

In the post, the fan expressed that they’ve been pondering over a theory for some time and the “Surprise” episode strengthened their belief. They think that the story of Bluey occurs around the early 2000s.

‘Reason 1: Bandit talks about growing up in the 80s as a kid.

He might be from the late 1970s or early 1980s. This means he was likely in his mid-twenties to late twenties around the start of the 2000s. At that time, it’s common for a father to be that age when his children are approximately the same age.

Reason 2: The technology. While some argue that it leaps forward, I personally feel it leaps to the present moment instead.

Everything electronic they own is up-to-date. There’s a noticeable amount of items that resemble Amazon products, such as an Echo Dot, an Echo Show, and a Ring Doorbell. Additionally, they possess a robot vacuum (which isn’t functioning particularly well) and a digital photo frame.

‘Cool theory,’ said one user on the thread, while another gushed: ‘Love this.’

As a fellow Bluey enthusiast, let me chime in: ‘Completely on board with your sentiments! I was born in 1981, and I became a parent for the first time in 2004 at the tender age of 23. This year, my little one will be turning 21. That means our beloved Bandit would be roughly around my age, give or take a few years!’

Meanwhile, other dedicated viewers were keen to punch holes in the theory. 

One fan suggested that since Bandit is a doctor, he likely needed a considerable amount of time for his education. Given this, it’s possible he decided to postpone having children.

One spectator found it hard to accept the notion that Bluey’s parents, Bandit and Chilli, were around 20 years old.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but notice that Bandit and Chili seem to have a refined, established air about them, more characteristic of individuals in their forties rather than those in their late twenties. This impression is further reinforced by the knowledge that Chili faced fertility challenges, leading me to speculate that they may have started their family in their mid-thirties instead of their twenties.

A different fan, challenging the theory, commented that ‘On average, first-time mothers in Australia are about 29.8 years old, suggesting that there are certainly some older parents around.’

A careful observer raised questions about the time period being depicted, as they noticed a detail familiar to many Bluey enthusiasts.

‘The animated Brisbane sky line has buildings constructed post 2017,’ they posted on the thread.

Even though there were doubts earlier, it was confirmed that Bandit’s age was determined in October, specifically during the airing of the episode titled Browny Bear.

In the short scene, Bandit’s driver’s license can be seen with the birth date October 25, 1978.

For over two years, an animated show aimed at kids has consistently ranked among the top ten most-streamed TV shows in the United States.

This month, the Nielsen ratings (a service that monitors U.S. television viewership) collected and reported the statistics, as stated on the Comicbook website.

Based on Nielsen’s findings, Bluey has consistently ranked among the top ten streamed TV shows in the U.S. since October 2022.

In over 60 different nations, the Emmy-winning animated series ‘Bluey’ can be watched. All three seasons are accessible for viewing on ABC iview.

Recently, it was disclosed that BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company are planning to premiere Bluey’s debut animated movie on the cinema screen. This project is being penned and helmed by the series creator, Joe Brumm.

Brumm expressed that he found the extended format work on “The Sign” in Series 3 particularly enjoyable, and taking it to a full-length feature film seems like a logical progression from that experience.

I’ve long believed that Bluey merits a full-fledged cinematic adventure. I aspire for it to be a shared, memorable experience that everyone in the family can appreciate and enjoy together.
