Aubrey Plaza deletes her Instagram account one week after husband Jeff Baena’s shock death at 47
After the sad passing of her husband, Jeff Baena, at the age of 47, Aubrey Plaza has chosen to remove her Instagram account a week later.
The Facebook or Instagram account belonging to the 40-year-old actress has been turned off, displaying a notice to her fans: “I apologize, but this page cannot be reached.
A few days have passed since she chose to remove her account, this action follows her speaking out for the first time after the public announcement about her husband’s tragic suicide.
According to a brief statement from her representative, as reported by DailyMail, “This is an overwhelmingly sad incident. We’re profoundly thankful for the kindness shown to us. At this difficult moment, we kindly ask for privacy.
The announcement followed as Plaza had to relinquish her hosting responsibilities during the 82nd Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles last weekend.
On Friday, the show announced Plaza as their new presenter through a press statement – coincidentally, this announcement came on the same day that Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed Baena’s death at a house in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, determining it to be a suicide by hanging.
Plaza, who started dating Baena back in 2011 and got married to him in 2021, has worked with her late husband on films including Life After Beth (released in 2014), The Little Hours (2017), and Spin Me Round (2022).
Although Plaza did not attend the Golden Globes on Sunday, director Brady Corbet (aged 36), who won for Best Director in that category, acknowledged both Plaza and Baena in his acceptance speech.
Lastly, tonight, I’m sending my deepest sympathies to Aubrey Plaza and Jeff, along with their family – goodnight. This was shared by Corbet, as the cameras focused on an emotional Adrien Brody, 51, in the audience, who struggled to hold back tears while The Brutalist’s leading man was honored.
Although Baena hadn’t been nominated for a Golden Globe throughout his career, he did secure recognition twice in the form of Grand Jury Prize nominations for two of his movies at the Sundance Film Festival. These were Joshy from 2016 and Life After Beth in 2014.
After the death of her husband, Plaza has received numerous messages of condolence from people, including Julia Fox and Selma Blair. These colleagues have extended comforting words to the 40-year-old actress-producer during this difficult time following the family’s tragic event.
On Friday morning, it was discovered that Baena had taken his own life through hanging at a residence in Los Angeles. This conclusion was reached later by the Medical Examiner’s Office of Los Angeles County.
52-year-old Blair expressed that no words could fully capture the depth of his pain, in a comment on Plaza’s latest post from December 24th, on Instagram.
Fox, 34, wrote in the thread, ‘Sending you so much love’ with an emoji of a dove.
Actress Alison Brie (aged 42) posted a sequence of pictures featuring Baena on her Instagram Stories, accompanying them with a symbol representing a broken heart.
In my own words, I recently shared a heartfelt tribute penned by the talented comedian and actor, Adam Pally, who is both a dear friend and esteemed colleague of mine. This acknowledgment was a testament to our deep personal bond as well as his admiration for my professional abilities.
Pally described him as someone who collaborated and mentored, a scrappy basketball player with an unattractive jump shot, but incredibly talented. He was also a connector of people, nurturer of potential, always knowing the best place to eat no matter the location. Above all, he was a generous host with a very open policy, a walking film encyclopedia, and most importantly, my friend.
Expressing my feelings, I echo, ‘I’m deeply saddened for Aubrey Baena and his family, as well as everyone who knew him, whether from his film sets, home visits, or through his circle of influence. Thank you, Jeff, for having faith in me. May your soul rest in peace, and may your memory serve as a comfort to us all.’
On her Instagram post, actress-producer Barbara Crampton, aged 66, expressed her sympathy to Plaza and said, ‘I’m really sorry. May the love from others sustain you.’
35-year-old actor Rain Dove expresses their deep affection for Aubrey with these words: “We adore you immensely, and the news about your cherished one is heart-wrenchingly tragic.
Wishing you a great deal of safety during these times. Feel free to take as much time as needed for yourself to cope with this situation. Avoid rushing back to work unless it feels absolutely right for you.
Originally from Miami, Baena honed his skills at New York University before embarking on his journey in the entertainment industry. During an interview with podcaster Marc Maron in 2017, Baena admitted that Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange and Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2 played significant roles in inspiring him to follow a creative path.
Throughout his professional journey, Baena has directed five standalone films, four of which made their premiere at Sundance. These include Horse Girl from 2020 and Joshy from 2016. Moreover, he was the lead director for an episode in the TV series Cinema Toast during 2021.
Besides penning all his films himself, he collaborated on the screenplay for the 2004 film “I Heart Huckabees” with David O. Russell. Furthermore, in the same year, he contributed unacknowledged writing to the movie “Meet the Fockers.
The movie titled “Joshy,” centering around Plaza and headlined by Thomas Middleditch, Adam Pally, and Alex Ross Perry, explores heavy subject matter, narrating the tale of a man attempting to heal after the suicide of his fiancée, supported by his companions.
Actress Amy Poehler, known for portraying April Ludgate on Parks and Recreation from 2009 to 2015, has experienced a significant boost in her career lately, following her Emmy-nominated performance in The White Lotus in 2023.
It wasn’t immediately apparent how a personal family tragedy might affect her future work commitments, given that she has several projects at different stages.
Plaza is the one who carries on after Baena’s passing. His mother, Barbara Stern, stepfather Roger Stern, father Scott Baena, stepmother Michele Baena, brother Brad Baena, and stepsiblings Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman remain, according to his representative to the AP.
