Thanos first appeared briefly in several Marvel movies – The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers: Age of Ultron – before becoming a central villain in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Though two versions of Thanos died in Endgame, rumors continue to suggest Josh Brolin might reprise the role. A new rumor about Thanos returning has surfaced, and if true, I’m hoping it signals the adaptation of one of his most iconic comic book battles into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to scooper Daniel Richtman (via ComicBookMovie), Josh Brolin is expected to return as Thanos in Avengers: Secret Wars, which will conclude the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga. This would be the sixth time Brolin has played the character, including his voice work for alternate versions of Thanos in the Disney+ animated series What If…? and his previous appearances in most of the Avengers films. The film would also bring him back together with directors Joe and Anthony Russo, and Robert Downey Jr., revisiting the dynamic between Tony Stark and Thanos from Infinity War and Endgame.
Robert Downey Jr. is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time as Doctor Doom, the primary villain in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies. While it’s unclear if his version of Doom is connected to a variant of Tony Stark, like the original plan for Jonathan Majors’ Kang, it seems Doom’s goal will be to conquer the entire multiverse. If the rumors are true, this will put him on a collision course with Thanos, and I predict Doom will ultimately defeat and destroy whatever version of Thanos appears in Secret Wars, similar to how Tony Stark eliminated an alternate Thanos in Endgame.

I’m really hoping the upcoming story will show Doom defeating Thanos in a similar way to their confrontation in the 2015 Secret Wars comic. In that storyline, Doom gained the power of the Beyonders, created a new world from the remains of the multiverse, and ruled as God Emperor. Thanos tried to overthrow Doom, but Doom utterly defeated him – brutally, even, as depicted in the image.

Considering the new Multiverse Saga, if Thanos shows up in Avengers: Secret Wars, it’s likely he’ll be a version of the character from another universe, not one of the Thanos we saw in Endgame brought back to life. This raises the question of how big Josh Brolin’s role will be, but I doubt Thanos will be a major player for long. Marvel probably doesn’t want Thanos to steal the spotlight from Doctor Doom, and it’s hard to imagine Downey’s Doom teaming up with anyone. Plus, Thanos would almost certainly try to take any power Doom possesses. We might not see anything as extreme as Thanos’ body being dismantled, but I’m pretty sure he won’t survive Secret Wars.
We’ll find out exactly what role Thanos plays after Avengers: Secret Wars comes out on December 17, 2027. But first, we need to see what Doctor Doom is up to in Avengers: Doomsday, which hits theaters on December 18.
