NASCAR veteran linked to final empty seat for the 2025 season
Confirmation from Front Row Motorsports that Zane Smith will join their team in the third car for the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series indicates that only one chartered car remains without a confirmed driver.
For the 2025 season, Rick Ware Racing has decided to scale down from operating two cars to just one. Instead, they’ve rented out their second racing charter to RFK Racing, who will now field three cars instead of two. However, the No. 51 Ford will still be in action full-time for them throughout the season.
In the original plan, Justin Haley was supposed to drive the No. 51 Ford full-time in 2025. However, before the start of the 2024 season, Haley was essentially swapped with Corey LaJoie. Spire Motorsports confirmed Haley for the 2025 season, but Rick Ware Racing did not confirm LaJoie’s participation beyond the 2024 season.
LaJoie is not expected to return to Rick Ware’s team in 2017.
In the year 2025, Cody Ware, Rick’s son and one of the drivers who operated the No. 15 Ford in 2024, is considered the top contender to assume control over the No. 51 Ford.
It seems that Corey LaJoie is yet to finalize his 2025 plans and it’s unlikely he will drive the RWR No. 51 full-time next year. Instead, it looks like Cody Ware might take over as the main driver for that car in 2025.

For eight consecutive years, Ware has raced in the Cup Series, consistently representing his father’s team during that time. In all but four races of 2021, he drove the No. 51 car, which was a Chevrolet. He competed full-time in 2022, except for one late-season race caused by injury. However, plans for him to compete full-time in 2023 were disrupted when he was arrested.
For the 2024 season, he was brought back and paired with Kaz Grala, whose future plans for 2025 are yet to be determined, as well as Riley Herbst, who will be joining 23XI Racing in a new Toyota vehicle.
Over the years, Ware has participated in 106 races within the Cup Series, starting from his debut at Atlanta Motor Speedway back in 2017. Notably, he’s achieved two top 10 finishes at Daytona International Speedway – placing sixth in 2022 and a career-best fourth in 2024. Moreover, he boasts eight additional top 20 finishes, with two of those coming during his nine-race run last season.
If Ware is officially announced as the permanent driver of the No. 51 Ford for the 2025 racing season, it will mark the first instance where every one of the 36 chartered entries has a full-time driver during the charter period.
As a fervent racing enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the 67th annual Daytona 500 kicks off the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season on a Sunday in mid-February, specifically the 16th. Get ready for the action-packed race because Fox will be broadcasting it live from Daytona International Speedway, starting at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
