Harriet Walter and Steve Coogan transform in first-look trailer for new drama
Channel 4 has released a first-look trailer at Brian and Maggie.
In a fresh, two-episode production, they’re reenacting an interview from 1989 between the former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher (portrayed by Harriet Walter), and Brian Walden (played by Steve Coogan). Walden was a Labour MP who gained notoriety for his tough political interviews.
The trailer depicts Walter and Coogan, who are hardly recognizable as Walker and Walden, displaying a strong bond of friendship that came to an unexpected end after the notorious interview took place.
The trailer reveals that their friendship started during Walden’s initial television appearance on Weekend World, as Thatcher was quite specific about the camera positions and set decorations.
After their initial encounter, the two appeared to get along quite well and kept in frequent touch, until the fateful 1989 interview, a hint of which was subtly dropped towards the end.
1989 found me captivated as Brian and Margaret sat down for what would turn out to be an unforgettable final television conversation. Unbeknownst to them, they were about to partake in one of the most legendary political dialogues ever recorded.
Our epic 45-minute battle turned out to be the hot topic across the nation, sparking a chain of occurrences that ultimately led to Margaret’s resignation. Subsequent conversations between us never happened.” (First person perspective as a gamer)
Brian and Maggie, a play penned by James Graham, is most famously recognized for his work on Sherwood. The screenplay was adapted from the book “Why Is This Lying Bastard Lying to Me?”, authored by Rob Burley.
The play is orchestrated by acclaimed director Stephen Frears, renowned for his work on “A Very English Scandal” and “Philomena,” both of which featured Coogan in their cast.
This year, in the United Kingdom, each episode of “Brian and Maggie,” lasting an hour, is scheduled to air on Channel 4. As of now, there’s no confirmed release date for these episodes. Meanwhile, it’s BBC Studios that will be responsible for distributing the show internationally.
Brian and Maggie will air on Channel 4 in 2025.
