NASCAR: Big-name driver in position to miss the 2025 Daytona 500

The upcoming 2025 Daytona 500 race promises an exceptionally strong and diverse field of open cars, which is quite remarkable for the NASCAR Cup Series and hasn’t been seen for a while.

Over the last ten years, the grandstands of open car racing events haven’t exactly been buzzing with big names or impressive performances. Typically, a limited number of drivers and teams with little to no backing from sponsors would face off against each other, with some dropping out before the main event due to Wednesday’s qualifying round and Thursday’s preliminary races.

In the last few years, things have become a tad more engaging. Notable figures like Travis Pastrana, Conor Daly, and seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson are now participating. Interestingly, Johnson, who has retired, is back to race, not due to being automatically qualified, but to merely secure a spot in the field.

However, those recently improved lineups don’t stack up whatsoever to what is likely in store for the 2025 Daytona 500.

Spread throughout, you’ll find well-known personalities, top-tier talents, and captivating plots that will draw you in.

Everywhere you look, there are recognizable faces, exceptional skill sets, and gripping narratives to hook your interest.

Initially, Mike Wallace, a seasoned NASCAR driver at 65 years old, plans to compete and potentially become the inaugural racer to have driven the Generation 3, Generation 4, Generation 5, Generation 6, and Generation 7 Cup cars. If successful in qualifying, this would mark his first appearance in the Cup Series since the 2015 Daytona 500, where he’ll be driving the No. 66 MBM Motorsports Ford.

Helio Castroneves, a four-time winner at the Indy 500, is now part of Trackhouse Racing’s PROJECT91 team. The purpose of PROJECT91 is to attract top-tier international racing talent to NASCAR. Given his immense popularity and success in IndyCar, Castroneves brings a large fanbase and is expected to be highly competitive. Notably, the car he will drive has previously won a race in its limited outings.

Besides the confirmed entrants, there are several well-known contenders whose participation has yet to be verified, but is strongly anticipated and almost certain.

2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion Martin Truex Jr. is almost assured to participate in the race and may bid farewell by claiming his first Daytona 500 victory. Previously, it was suggested by Truex and Denny Hamlin in 2024 that he would join the 23XI Racing team for the race, but now it seems he will compete with a new team, Tricon Garage, under the guidance of Joe Gibbs Racing.

In summary, we have Johnson joining the fray, similar to Truex. However, unlike Truex, Johnson’s official enrollment hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it’s highly anticipated due to his consistent participation in the Daytona 500 over the past two years. With an eye on his third triumph at the Daytona 500, Johnson will also focus on propelling his Legacy Motor Club team to a strong start for the season after a challenging first two seasons under his co-ownership.

This list omits additional teams and drivers who are anticipated to participate in Speedweeks, though their competitiveness is uncertain. In total, up to ten drivers may vie for just four available positions.

Drama should be expected with this long, star-studded list of open entries.

If ten or more unoccupied entries appear, that means over half of the cars trying to qualify for the race won’t make it, returning home empty-handed.

As a gamer, it’s clear that we’ve got four heavyweight contenders lining up, and I reckon three of them are going to be tough opponents. The stage is set for an intense showdown, with each one vying for their place in the field. Somebody might not make the cut, so it’s all about staying sharp and keeping my game on point!

Although it might seem obvious that drivers like Castroneves, Truex, and Johnson could effortlessly secure a spot in the field due to their top-notch equipment and past victories, this isn’t always true. This is Daytona, where the old saying rings true: “the unexpected can occur at any moment.

In the case of the year 2024, it was generally expected that both Johnson in the No. 84 Toyota and David Ragan in the No. 60 RFK Racing Ford would effortlessly secure a spot in the race based on their speed. However, things didn’t go as planned for Johnson. Instead, he found himself racing against J.J. Yeley in the No. 44 NY Racing Chevrolet in a Duel race. The outcome was close; Johnson nearly missed qualifying as he raced Yeley up to the final turn, but managed to pass him just before the finish line in an exciting, heart-stopping conclusion.

2023, it seems Conor Daly struggled significantly with a 50 Money Team Racing Chevrolet that developed bothersome vibrations during qualifying and his Duel race, causing him to lag far behind the pace. However, an incident on the back straightaway involving Kyle Busch, Riley Herbst, and Austin Hill opened up an opportunity for Daly to secure a spot in the race.

Those two races demonstrated that no matter if a car is fast or slow, it can always stay competitive. Furthermore, they vividly portrayed the essence of NASCAR racing at super speedways, highlighting how a possible accident could significantly impact the final outcomes.

Even if you have the fastest vehicle throughout the week, getting entangled in someone else’s predicament can lead to an early exit for the weekend. It’s similar to Indy 500 qualifying and Bump Day, where numerous factors are at play, increasing the likelihood that something unexpected might happen to anyone at the most inconvenient moment.

There’s a chance that someone else might excel more than you, causing you to lose the competition, simply because the task wasn’t accomplished effectively.

2025 is shaping up to be an unforgettable year for Speedweeks, I tell ya! Back then, who’d have thought that legends like Wallace, Castroneves, Truex, and Johnson would find themselves battling it out fiercely, just to secure a spot in the “Great American Race”? And hey, let’s not rule out the thrill of seeing them bumping shoulders, or even clashing wheels, as they push each other to the limit in their pursuit for the lead!

With numerous prominent contenders teetering on the edge, there’s an increased likelihood of a sensational upheaval in the headlines or, at minimum, captivating narratives to unfold. It promises to be a riveting spectacle for every racing enthusiast.
