Ncuti Gatwa missed out on award-winning movie due to Doctor Who
Ncuti Gatwa missed out on a role in Jesse Eisenberg’s award-winning A Real Pain due to Doctor Who.
In the movie, which features Eisenberg from “The Social Network” in both directing and acting roles, we find the story of cousins David (Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin). They embark on a journey through Poland to pay tribute to their deceased grandmother. Along this trip, old conflicts re-emerge, and fresh disputes start brewing as they delve deeper into the roots of their family heritage.
In simpler terms, Culkin, who plays on the show Succession, won a Golden Globe for his performance in that movie. Additionally, the film received a total of three other nominations during the ceremony.
The actor who played Sex Education’s Maeve Wiley (Ncuti Gatwa) was nearly cast for the role of Rwandan genocide survivor Eloge, a part that ultimately ended up being portrayed by House of the Dragon’s Kurt Egyiawan instead.
During an interview about the movie (as reported by Collider), Eisenberg revealed that Gatwa was the initial actor he sought for the part. However, his obligations to Doctor Who prevented the director from moving forward with the casting.
In my attempt to hire a Rwandan actor for the project, it was Kurt who introduced me to an exceptionally talented individual named Ncuti Gatwa.
He is currently portraying “Doctor Who” on television, but due to a change in the “Doctor Who” production schedule, he couldn’t commit to our movie project. As a result, we had to search extensively for a Rwandan actor, which turned out to be quite challenging.
At that moment, I handed the task over to Eloge, who is of Cameroonian descent, and asked him, “Could you assist me in shaping this so it respectfully reflects your culture?
This production titled “A Real Pain” features an impressive lineup of stars including Will Sharpe from “The White Lotus“, Jennifer Grey known for her role in “Dirty Dancing“, and Ellora Torchia, who was seen in “In the Earth“.
Yesterday, it made its cinema debut in the UK, while it’s set for a U.S. premiere on Hulu on January 16th. In the UK, you can find it streaming on Disney+, though the exact release date is yet to be revealed.
Initially, the movie received a perfect 100% positive score on Rotten Tomatoes. Currently, it’s holding an admirable 96%.
A Real Pain is in UK cinemas now and available to watch on Hulu in the US from January 16.
In the United Kingdom, the series “Doctor Who” is broadcasted on BBC One, while it can be found on Disney+ elsewhere. If you’re in the UK, you can access classic episodes of “Doctor Who” through BBC iPlayer.
