Golden Globes bring in 9.3 million viewers, down 2% from last year
This year’s Golden Globe Awards, with its fresh host and politically neutral tone, attracted approximately 9.3 million viewers, representing a slight drop in viewership compared to the previous year (2025), as indicated by Nielsen’s statistics.
The viewership for this year’s award show decreased by 2% from last year’s 9.4 million viewers, with a total of 9.2 million viewers watching live on CBS and Paramount+. Despite showing a slight improvement compared to the 2023 broadcast, these numbers are significantly lower than the 19 million viewers who tuned in back in 2019.
The Globes had stiff competition from the Sunday Night Football broadcast, which showcased a clash between the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions. This particular event drew in 25.8 million spectators, marking a 22% increase compared to last year’s matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins, as reported by Nielsen.
2022 saw NBC opt out of airing the ceremony due to an investigation by The New York Times revealing questionable practices and self-serving behavior within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), historically responsible for voting on the Golden Globes. This revelation, coupled with the discovery that HFPA had no Black members, ignited a boycott from publicists and studios.
Following efforts towards restructuring, the organization ceased operation in 2023, transitioning its members into employees of a profit-driven corporation. The television network CBS began airing the series from 2024 onwards.
In simpler terms, this year’s event, which took place at the Beverly Hilton, was emceed by comedian Nikki Glaser. Notably, Robert Lloyd from The Times lauded her act, remarking that in industry parlance, she nailed it, or “she killed.
In his words, ‘Her humor was spot on, her presentation flawless, it seemed like she was genuinely enjoying herself.’ Regarding Glaser, her comedy can lean towards the dark side; her latest Golden Globe-nominated special is named ‘Someday You’ll Die’. She gained fame for roasting celebrities. Yet, she managed to be slightly critical but mostly harmless.
Last year’s host, Jo Koy, received significant criticism, but Glaser’s performance this time around was significantly better. However, even Glaser’s stellar show couldn’t stop the long-term decline in viewership for awards shows that we’ve observed over the past few years.
Regarding our main age groups, Nielsen’s findings showed a bit of a mismatch. The number of viewers aged between 18 and 34 decreased by 5%, while the viewership of those aged between 25 and 54 went up by 3% compared to the previous year.
The viewership numbers for the Golden Globes, as reported by Dick Clark Productions on Monday, differ from those provided by Nielsen. Dick Clark Productions, which is owned by Penske Media Corp., stated that the Golden Globes attracted an average of 10.1 million viewers based on overnight data from VideoAmp, a competitor to Nielsen. Additionally, they reported that the streaming audience for the Golden Globes grew by 9% compared to the previous year.
CBS hasn’t provided a response yet regarding the Nielsen ratings data. Last year, their corporate parent, Paramount Global, decided not to renew their contract with Nielsen due to increasing costs and the exploration of other ways to gauge audience sizes.
