NASCAR: Daytona 500 landing spot emerges for Martin Truex Jr.
Despite retiring from full-time NASCAR racing following the 2024 Cup Series season, Martin Truex Jr. made it clear that he intends to participate in NASCAR races, both at the Cup level and occasionally, in future competitions.
For the 2025 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, it has been established that the champion of the 2017 Cup Series is seeking a ride, aiming to secure his first victory in the historic “Great American Race” for the first time.
It was also confirmed that Cole Pearn, who helped him win the 2017 championship at Furniture Row Racing, will serve as his crew chief.
But a team for Truex still hasn’t been confirmed.
As a devoted fan, I’m sharing that Truex himself has disclosed that Joe Gibbs Racing plays a pivotal role in assembling his race entry. However, being a team with four full-time entries under their wing, they currently lack the capacity to include an additional fifth car for him.
23XI Racing, a team that shares a technical partnership with Joe Gibbs’ team, has essentially been disqualified from competition, despite the fact that they remain technically capable of fielding an open entry.
Apart from Legacy Motor Club, Toyota only has one more team in the Cup Series, and that’s the one run by the Legacy Motor Club. They currently field two cars on a full-time basis, but they are planning to add a third car for the Daytona 500, specifically for co-owner Jimmie Johnson. Expanding to a second non-chartered team was always considered a challenge.
It appears that Toyota’s Tricon Garage, a leading team in the Truck Series, might collaborate with Joe Gibbs Racing to compete under a shared entry for Truex.
Since Truex’s vehicle, regardless if it’s from Tricon Garage or not, is an open entry, he won’t automatically be part of the race. Instead, he’ll have to qualify either through the individual qualifying session or one of the two Bluegreen Vacations Duel races to secure his spot on the grid.
In total, there are 40 cars in the race field, 36 of which are chartered and have been locked in. This leaves room for up to 10 additional, or ‘open’, entries to compete for the remaining 4 open spots.
In simpler terms, the quickest drivers among those who are open to participate, during the one-car qualifying round, automatically secure their spot in the race. Similarly, winners of the Bluegreen Vacations Duel races also qualify. If a driver (or more than one) secures both ways, the next fastest drivers from the qualifying round will then take those spots.
The preliminary race for the 67th annual Daytona 500 will happen at Daytona International Speedway on Wednesday, February 12. Following this, the two Bluegreen Vacations Duel races are set for Thursday, February 13, starting at 7:00 p.m. ET and airing on Fox. The main race is scheduled for Sunday, February 16, also at 2:30 p.m. ET.
In this version, I’ve aimed to maintain the same meaning while using simpler language and a more conversational tone.
